OK
most of us all have CRT projectors...this is why we follow around the guy who owns this site like a god.

A friend down the street is looking for a flat screen tv. 47inch or so.
what do you guys suggest? Something relieable.

also if you get some of these new tv that can do 1080p...do you suggest the person also pick up a scaler? or do they usually come with a built in one?

thanks

Pretty much all the new consumer displays have decent scalers built-in to scale lower-resolution sources to the display. The expense of a 1080p scaler could approach the price of the display, and it's utility would be questionable on a screen that size. Just check the reviews or test with sources to make sure the internal scaler/doubler works well.

LCD doesn't carry nearly the price premium over plasma that it once did. At an affordable price ($2500-3500), you can get a nice 1080p display in the size range you mentioned.

He'll have to read the reviews, pick his budget point, and go with what he can afford or justify. Go with a name brand like Samsung, Pioneer, etc. as opposed to a third-tier brand. The extra $500 is money well spent in my opinion. There are lots of decent options, so tell him to get out there and start looking.

I saw the Mitsubishi 60" 6 color unit. Aside from the usual pixelation ( much less than in previos generations )and the scheen over the whole picture it looked ok. Maybe they have a smaller model that would meet your friends requirements.

Whatever you get, stick with a brand name you know. The Wal Mart crap is indeed crap, as is the Canadian Tire stuff, etc. Why people buy electronics at Canuck Tire is beyond me. I wouldn't buy brake pads at BEst Buy...

It is last years Sony XBR in a new unit kde50a or e 2000 2399.00 retail. The panel is as good as it gets and I sell the Mitsubishi and DLP bites. To much artifacts intoduced. The new color wheel looks good and is closer to the SXRD. Buy it and never look back.
