Anyone know anything about Favi screens? Amazon sells them and they are very reasonably priced compared to the more popular brands:
http://www.amazon.com/FAVI-16-120-Inch-Projector-FF-HD-120/dp/B0035IV9HC/ref=wl_it_dp_o?ie=UTF8&coliid=I34OVFMVFS6VF6&colid=2T0KIBETAQ7QW&tag=curtpalmecrtp-20

Searching for Favi on this forum returned zero hits. The user reviewers major complaint was it was difficult to setup. Anyone seen one of these in action and what is your opinion?

Never heard of them but, the frame looks like it's worth the purchase even if the screen material is sh*t. Thanks for posting this it gives me something to consider.

What does it cost to ship to you? My screen cost me $200 in FedEx LTL shipping because the box was 11' long.

So cheap it's scarry huh!

I went to Favi's Web site and downloaded the install guide. From the pictures the frame looked to be well made. Amazon gives the gain at 6 but the Favi web site says its a white matt surface with a gain of 2.4. I suspect Amazon is wrong. Also a Michigan company is selling the same screen on eBay for $207.21/free shipping but advertise the gain to be 1.3. All are the same model number: FF-HD-120. Unless I hear something bad, I may order one.

If the gain is 6 or even 2.4, I'd eat my shorts. Laughing 1.3 is believable. If it were 2.4 it would need to have glass beads or the like impregnated into the material. And I don't think they can do that for that price.

Got a reply from Retail Ace concerning the gain:

"Thank you for contacting us. I'll try and clear up the confusion for you. The gain for our fixed frame screens is 2.4

The gain of 6 is for glass beaded screens, and the gain of 1.3 is for the matte white electric and pull down screens we sell.

I do apologize for the confusion."

Retail Ace and Favi share the same business address so I think they are the same.

2.4 sounds pretty good to me!

Hmmmm... I wonder what they are using to get the gain up to 2.4? It may be like a lot of other vendors where they just make the number up. Da-Lite's numbers are trustworthy, as are Carada and Elite's. I have yet to check anything with my Stewart samples. Embarassed

Wonder if they'd send me samples? I'll contact them.

The eBay price of $207.21 must have been in error. They changed the price to $247.00.

Got the screen setup and I’m overall pleased with it. The frame is made out of extruded aluminum and is quite stout, measuring 3.25" x 1.25" cross section and covered with black felt on the visible side. The screen material has a matte white appearance but is high gain. I have no way to confirm the gain but the G90 is able to drive the 120" screen with lower brightness and contrast setting than the 1.0 gain, 100" (4:3) Da-Lite it replaced. I cannot detect hot spotting or color shifting watching video; however during the warm up screen hot spotting is quite evident and I suspect hot spotting may be noticeable during all white scenes. The screen material is very thin; probably to minimize frame tension. The 42 piece screen tensioners keep the screen flat but are a bit of a PIA to install. I think the design is good but the workmanship is a bit lacking. The frame’s aluminum was dirty. The mitered joints, while accurately cut, were not de-burred. Also the frame’s pre-drilled corners holes looked like they tried to correct the placement but did a poor job. I guess that’s what you get when 11 year old Chinese children work in manufacturing. Anyway the final product is very attractive and does not appear to be “cheap”. I’ve attached a few pictures. At some point I'll calibrate the projector to the screen and will add a few screen shots.

For $250? Man that's alright. I do see the hotspotting in you photo. It doesn't look any worse than my Wilsonart screen.

Keep us updated.

Calibrated the projector to the screen as best I could. HCFR file attached. The graphs don't look too good. On the RGB level graph the lines should be at the same % at the cal points of 30 & 80 but they're way off. Also it looks like the blue is not defocused. Oh and I forgot to turn off gamma boost. Yes it's been awhile since I calibrated a projector. I need to do this again.
