I know, I know...it seems like Windows 7 JUST came out!
The developers early preview build was released and is available for download and installation!
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/apps/br229516
This is free for all to try...just don't screw up your Win7 installation...aka don't do this unless you know what you are doing...this is an EARLY build.
It is there attempt at unifying the OS with their phone/tablet strategy. The metro UI present in their new WP7 is the front page of the new Windows 8.
I am downloading it currently and will try to install it on a netbook to try it out. I don't have a touch screen device to try it on...I have been meaning to get an older tablet or an all-in-one with touchscreen as a second/kitchen PC...this might help me find one on eBay or craigslist.
Looks pretty fun but I read in the comments on endgadget that there are several bugs...this is really just for developers or enthusiasts who like to format computers over and over!
I wish HP would ever released new drivers so I could virtualize on my laptop...stupid HP.

I am Canadian, but I've never worn hockey equipment to school, nor did I ever ride the short bus.
It's called having a classic PC.

What laptop are you using!? I ran VMware on my old Vista HP laptop, and I run it on my new Win7 HP laptop.
Maybe you need to turn on the virtualization settings in the BIOS?

No options in the BIOS. Believe me...I have researched it plenty. HP HDx16t
I have other computers to try it on...don't worry.
After seeing these demos it looks pretty sweet. I don't want to get my hopes up but I am really starting to get a little excited to see this on a REAL tablet with processing power, battery life, ports for connections, etc.
With a solid dock for keyboard and mouse at home this would be a killer traveling companion!

No thanks.
I am pretty tired of this move to make the desktop OS like the tablet OS. Why can't they be separate and unique to their intended purposes?

It is called integration and it will make your life easier if the OS remembers everything about you when you switch between desktop, laptop, tablet and smartphone. That is the ultimate goal.
It still has the "standard" Windows 7 style desktop anyway. The thing that I am pumped about is that it will have the "desktop" OS power even in the tablet format...so you won't be limited to tablet OS when you are mobile.

I'm pretty sure Microsoft isn't going to blow off a billion users by not allowing the user to configure the GUI to look like Windows 2000/XP. They tried this slightly with Vista and learned their lesson. You can probably take the fluffy interface offering and simply not use it.
For instance, I have no icons or background for my desktop. Not allowing me to continue in this manner would blow me off.

They have already confirmed that you won't simply be able to disable the MetroUI experience because it is baked into the root of the OS. They will be offering a Windows 7 style desktop but if you click on the "Start" button it will take you back to the MetroUI.
Personally I think this is a great idea...making the MetroUI just a skin on top of a desktop would make it unreliable and laggy.
Obviously, they will still need to have an OS for the enterprise customers, so I imagine that regular Windows 7 will live on or they will release a business version of Windows 8 without the UI at all.

If that is the case then my advice is for everyone to buy W7 copies and wait out the Vista repeated mistakes. Keep in mind that I pnly buy Pro versions so maybe I'm buffering mysefl from brainless consumerism.

Well part of that statement is true

Man...I am the only one excited for this?
I guess it is because I have been using Media Center as my daily driver in the living room for the last 6 years? Or my complete disappointment in the abilities of current tablet offerings?
You guys are typically pretty cynical but you are making me feel like a fanboy!

I understand integration, but it still doesn't play to each devices strengths. I bet a lot of people will love it, but I bet even more will hate it. Linux could get a huge boost for those that prefer a more classical approach.
