I bought some black velvet with adhesive backing from McMaster-Carr. What do you think?

It doesn't look that plush. But it is pretty dark. Interesting place to look. I would have never thought of going to MC for velvet. (I am assuming you read about this somewhere?)

What are you plans for this?

This would be pretty slick for making some masking panels that could slide in a track.

Simple aluminum u-channel along top and bottom of screen. Panels made out of 1/8" hardboard covered in this velvet adhesive. Slide panels in for 16x9 and out for 2.35.

Came up in one of the laminate threads on AVS, for use as masking. I thought either a screen wall masking, or panels as you already mentioned. Waiting on another sample of flock to compare with.

Thanks for that link, but I think I've seen it before. One of the things that hinders a successful purchase is buying without sampling. I went to a fabric store over the weekend and looking at velvet and velveteen. I thought I really wanted the velvet, but as it turns out its plush-ness was sufficient to provide an almost glossy appearance. And while velveteen is often not recommended, it actually was a lot closer to the material sample I bought from McMaster-Carr.

As such, looking at pictures on websites is almost useless unless samples are ordered.
