...or so says Sony!

Apparently, there's a glitch in the firmware or operating system on the older PS3 "fat"... It's resetting the clock and breaking some functionality (both online and offline) for some games and functions on the PS3.

From Sony:
Latest info on PlayStation Network Status

Sony wrote:
Errors include:
  • The date of the PS3 system may be re-set to Jan 1, 2000.
  • When the user tries to sign in to the PlayStation Network, the following
message appears on the screen; “An error has occurred. You have been
signed out of PlayStation Network (8001050F)”.
  • When the user tries to launch a game, the following error message appears
on the screen and the trophy data may disappear; “Failed to install
    trophies. Please exit your game.”
  • When the user tries to set the time and date of the system via the
Internet, the following message appears on the screen; “The current date
and time could not be obtained. (8001050F)”
  • Users are not able to play back certain rental video downloaded from the
PlayStation Store before the expiration date.
We hope to resolve this problem within the next 24 hours. In the meantime, if you have a model other than the new slim PS3, we advise that you do not use your PS3 system, as doing so may result in errors in some functionality, such as recording obtained trophies, and not being able to restore certain data.

From PC World:
PlayStation Network 'Corrupted', Prevents Offline Play Worldwide

Sony Entertainment's Twitter followers have gone from 160,000 late last night to over 195,000 when I just looked. In fact, it went from 184,940-something to over 185k in just the last minute or two.

Ouch!!!

I just hope the bastards get it fixed by tomorrow, because my new copy of Battlefield 2 shows up from Amazon tomorrow for release day, and I have a little "online game night" planned with a work friend.

Looks like the situation corrected itself...

PlayStation Network Service Restored

Quote:
We are aware that the internal clock functionality in the PS3 units other than the slim model, recognized the year 2010 as a leap year. Having the internal clock date change from February 29 to March 1 (both GMT), we have verified that the symptoms are now resolved and that users are able to use their PS3 normally.

If the time displayed on the XMB is still incorrect, users are able to adjust time settings manually or via the internet. If we have new information, we will update you through the PlayStation.Blog or PlayStation.com.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

I'm surprised nobody had any snide remarks about Sony on this debacle! Wink

Remember when they decided to change DST a couple of years back? That really screwed my Beyond TV PVR's up so hey, time happens. There's nothing you can do about it.

My snide remarks were halted because a) my working Slim model wasn't affected, and b) my 60GB model has been dead for three months. As such, I am not about to recommend this product to anyone.

Ummm... Wan, why would you not recommend a PS3? How is your 60GB PS3 getting destroyed in a near-lighting strike Sony's fault?

Because I said so. Smile

Seems the problem turned out to be a bogus February 29th.

Yeah, Dave (Person99) would have been all over this!
