kal wrote: | Ok, I'm adding some changes that should hopefully help over the long term. Spammers want their URLs out there for search enging/harvesting reasons (the more places you're listed, the more likely you'll get a hit in search engines).
So to combat that I need to disable showing any member website URL / contact info to non-registered users. So now:
- When viewing a topic, contact info at the bottom of a post will not be displayed to guests (and therefore not to search engines like Google).
- Guests (and search engines like Google) do not have access to the memberlist page.
- Guests (and search engines like Google) do not have access to the groups page.
- Guests (and search engines like Google) do not have access member profile pages.
- The last registered user is no longer shown on the main index page.
If human (non-bot) spammers see that there's no way for another human or search 'bot to see their information, they won't bother registering I hope! My guess is that they use 'bots to find sites with open memberlists and then harvest the URLs so that they can register manually after a 'bot registration fails (since I have anti-bot advanced CAPTCHA stuff installed).
Death to all spammers. You guys really really suck. Get a real job for chrissakes!

Here's an example of the sort of tool that spammers use: http://fp.icontool.com/
Quote: | Forum Poster is a program that automatically post/reply messages to forums.
The current version can post to
1. phpBB Forum Boards from version 2.0.0 to 2.0.23 (http://www.phpbb.com/)
2. phpBB 3.0.x "Olympus"(http://www.phpbb.com/)
3. Invision Power Board (http://www.invisionboard.com/)
4. Snitz Forums 2000 (http://forum.snitz.com/)
5. vBulletin 3 (http://www.vbulletin.com/)
6. Simple Machines Forum (http://www.simplemachines.org/)
7. WoltLab Burning Board 2.x to 3.x (http://www.woltlab.de/index_en.php)
8. WowBB (http://www.wowbb.com/)
Forum Poster automatically register a user with the username, e-mail and password you typed on the board. It login as the registered user on the board and then post/reply it. All made automatically. With just one click!
Forum Poster support add, edit, delete forums URL, Import and export forum URL list.
Forum boards are an effective way to drive traffic to your site. With your posted Ads you can bring hundreds of new visitors to your site and increase your search engine rankings which counts on link popularity like Google.
|
Everything's automated. If it doesn't get in and post automatically, it tells you and you can take manual action if needed. Brutal.

Hmm... Weird, they don't have their own forum.
Funny... This page:
http://fp.icontool.com/buy.htm
It's $800 for the commercial site license, right? Or...
Quote: | Forum Poster Personal License
With the personal license you can use the program for noncommercial purposes in nonbusiness, noncommercial environment (at home); one license per one computer.
Price: 149.95 USD |
Umm... WTF noncommercial purpose would there be for SPAMMING HUNDREDS OF FORUMS?!?!?
There's a site to unleash a DoS attack on if I ever saw one.

When I was a mod on a local Atlanta HT forum I pretty much declined everyone. I felt if they were human they'd email me, the technical contact for the domain, etc., or at least try under the same name a second time, but nada. Of course, it seemed like 99% were bot attempts. And while I can appreciate the effort to make the protection system/mechanism autonomous there might just need to be something of a new approach taken.
So, not wanting to a) burden current subscribers (especially paid-for), and needing a better system, made on forum that is open to any registration form, deny any and all features to it by test posting (no graphics, markup, etc., and auto delete any thread that is more than 14 days old. Spam is only as good as some dumb SOB can click on a posted Spam link, right?
If you need volunteers to moderate such a specific honey pot forum then I'll be one to. Otherwise, access to anything other than read-only in other forums under this board should be paid-for only without honey pot mod approval.

Jeremy/Steve: I'm working on a MOD that will allow you guys (the mods) to nuke a user right from the thread, their profile, or from the memberlist page. Whatcha think? Make sense? Mods and admins (me) cannot be nuked and I'll program something in so that anyone with (say) more than 5 posts can't be nuked either.
Should make it easier to nuke fast.

Seems like letting a newly registered Spam twice in four minutes and post the EXACT SAME THING is a problem easily afforded. I thought kind of prevention was attainable years ago--but maybe with different board software.

OK... W..T..F.. is going on? What's with the total barrage of sh*t the last week or so? I bet I've deleted half a dozen posts (and the users) almost every day this week, and I'm sure I'm not the only one.
These ******* MUST be using an automated technique. I don't know how, with the CAPTCHA, but there's just too much crap getting through for it to all be manual.
Kal - Does the "delete user" mod you added for us also IP ban at the same time? I wonder if some of it is repeat from the same spammer. I also wonder if the site made it onto some central list that the shitbags are loading into their spam gun.

Man, sometimes they're posting them faster than I an delete them... Bastards.
Wanmans 59-cent solution is sounding pretty good at this point.

I just blew away a second one from that special ed school. Different user name.
I also killed a porn one off not thirty seconds later.
Since last Friday Feb 5th I've killed off at least a dozen. How many have you killed SC?

Oh yeah, I've killed at LEAST a dozen. Like I said, I think I've been averaging 2-4/day, so what is that, about 15 or so. At least half a dozen have been the stupid Cialis drug ones.
AnalogRocks wrote: | I just blew away a second one from that special ed school. Different user name. |
I haven't tried to track it, because I'm often just on my iPhone, but I'm wondering how many I've delete were repeat offenders. Kal... Can you wire it up so when we use the new delete button on the user profile page, that it also does an IP ban at the same time? I can't see a scenario where I want to delete a user and NOT also want to ban the IP. If that rare scenario came up, you could use the admin tools.
