Spam. Links to "freeware for sale", trojan horses, and spyware.

Kal, can you implement the "can't create a new topic until you have 5 posts"?

Not recommended as we get a lot of people who's first post is coming online to ask a question. Having to post 5 times in existing threads wouldn't really work.

With the regular forum software SPAM protection in place we used to get dozens of spammers automatically signing up every day (look at the 40,000 users who signed up at your crtforum.com forum) Smile. So I went through a few different CAPTCHA (Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart) tools. The latest worked well for the last year but lately we've been getting daily spammers.

I'v changed the sign-up CAPTCHA questions and see if that helps. They are now:

Quote:
What is the next number of this sequence? 10,20,30,40,__
What is the opposite of black?
What colour is a red apple?
What is 5 plus 6?
What is 2 + 1?
Spell out the number 5 in letters.

If this doesn't help, these are people that are going through the troubles of signing up manually, waiting for the email to enable their accout, enabling it, and then posting. Not much I can do about that. I don't want to manually accept people that sign up as that would be more work than deleting a spammer every day or two.

Kal

Those are some funny questions. I bet some of the regular humans would fail one of them. Here are some other questions worth considering:

What does CRT stand for?
What is a Canuck (this is a Canadian website)?
What season of the year are the Winter Olympics held in?
Does WanMan ever contribute to actual CRT threads? Very Happy
What political party are you most likely to be affiliated with?

Actually, Wan, your first one should be one of the question for signing up. If they don't know that, they sure don't belong here.

2nd question should be, What powers a projector through the power cord?

If you don't know both of these you shouldn't be anywhere near this stuff. Twisted Evil

Seriously though. We moderate out the spammers pretty quick.

I like caching them the same minute they post.

or modifying them a little Wink http://www.curtpalme.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=18084&highlight=julia

You sure do MOD them don't you. Wink

Seriously though you guys are great with screwing with the spammers.

And I was also serious about WAN's and my suggestions about the CRT and POWER cord bits, if you don't know at least that little why are you here?[/s]

I'd disagree on the CRT bit. Allot of people are here for HDFury, X-vue, or Moome stuff and aren't all that technical minded.

As Jeremy said, a large percentage of users here wouldn't know that. The point of the CAPTCHA questions isn't to week out non-technical or non-CRT users. It's to week out robots from signing up.

A more appropriate question may be how do you spell CRT? Laughing

There are several new Spams as of this morning. So much for control. Even the Guest account is being used to Spam.

The guest account is what spammers are listed as after their account is nuked. Nobody can spam as "guest" as this forum doesn't allow people to post as guest.

So I'm at a loss as to what to do. These people are signing up like everyone else and then spamming. We can't limit new users from posting since people typically only sign up when they first need to post.

Any thoughts guys? The number of spammers has gone through the roof since I made some changes to the questions 2 days ago!

Kal

Where they post is not relevant.
