I have been playing with my Sony BDP-S550. In the menu it has the following 4 settings.

4:2:2
4:4:4
RGB 16-235
RGB 0-255

I want to set the player to pass what's encoded on the disk. I've actually tried all 4 and I find when combined with the HDFury2 RGB 0-255 looked best.

How are the bluray disk's encoded?

As far as I know, Blu-rays are encoded 4:2:0 Component (YPbPr). I understand also, that video is always encoded at 16-235 range (with Below Black and Whiter than White info included).
If there is "auto" option in s550 I woul use it as starting point, since I think this should be auto-negotiated using HDMI (and EDID info). Unless of course there is some incompatibility between communicating components...
Generally from what I read so far, suggestions for manual set-up are 4:2:2 Component (at least specifically for PS3), since at least you avoid Component-RGB Color space conversion, but real life of course is always different (and more complicated) Very Happy .
Case in point: My hardware:
PS3 ->HDMI cable ->Onkyo 805 -> HDMI_to_DVI cable -> Lumagen HDP -> DVI cable -> Detronics PureLink ->RGBHV cable -> Ampro 4200 ( Smile )
Despite suggestions to contrary, I found (using Video Essentials and Internal Lumagen Patterns and it's ability to read IRE level of incoming signal), that RGB 0-255 gives me flat response from the system: e.a. 20 IRE window played from PS3 and measured (by Lumagen) registers as 20 IRE, just like it's internal 20 IRE window... Of course I am loosing Below Black and Whiter than whit info, but so be it...
So you my be right that in your particular case (just like in mine) RGB 0-255 IS the best option...

Hope it helps a bit,

Kris

4:2:2 is what you want if your hardware accepts it, hdfury2 does

I'll look into this next time I have time to watch a movie. I'll compare the 4:2:2 to the RGB 0-255

Generally one should go with what looks best. However that being said you are missing on the BTB and WTW using RGB 0-255. No biggie on the BTB but some Blu Rays make use of the WTW in certain shots.

Most will say to use 4:2:2 as this should have the least amount of processing from inside the player. However if your input device works best with RGB than the next choice would be RGB 16-235 (should include BTB and WTW) as this is inline with the video levels that the disk was recorded at.

The HDFury2 has color space scalling in it. It scales 16-255 to 0-255. Maybe that's why 0-255 direct from the player looked good.

I just did the Update to my BDP S550. It may be wishful thinking but the colors now seem "better" richer, deeper? Who knows. The update did make it load faster, now instead of 55 secs to load it takes 44 seconds. Wow blazingly fast Rolling Eyes

There were 9 updates done to the program, here is the Sony link.

I have found at least one thing that the update did that is great. The player can now do frame by frame slow motion. When the movie is paused you hit the >forward or reverse button that used to move you 10 seconds. Now it just moves 1 frame. I really missed being able to do that. Now I can read the print on the things in the background again Thumbs Up

Hey Dave, I just rented "Inglorious Bastards" and "Gamer".

Of course "Gamer" played fine but it was "Inglorious Bastards" I really wanted to see. Have you watched that movie on your BDP-S550 yet?

I get a "Disk not recognized" error.

Ok I followed a suggestion from AVS. I pulled the memory card. It started playing the movie right away. Interesting. I checked the card in Win XP and there was some stuff from Batman the Dark Knight on there but other than that it's empty.

The movie from 1:27 minutes in. I'm just trying to get it to play again now.

Tom, I am left asking why YCbCr (digital Component). Not questioning the digital vs analog, here, but the Component vs. RGB. Of course there MUST be a reason and that reason must be intended to achieve a goal, or an agenda. I'm betting, and I apologize AR for tangenting this discussion, it is to use color space compression. And if I am wrong, whatever the reason it isn't for the best interest of the cowsumer.

No, I haven't tried Inglorious Bastards yet. But I have yet to have a disk not play, some have frozen or jumped to the next chapter, it's so rare I don't even remember which ones did it.

My memory card is 1GB sony that came with it,and has Star Trek seasons 1 episodes in it that I watched 2 weeks ago, and nothing that I have watched since?

The disk was dirty. I cleaned it but that did't completely fix the issue. I had to restart 3 times but I finally made it through the movie. Good film.

This disk wasn't new? I have never had to clean a disk, and I live in one of the dustiest homes I know of. Then again, its child-free.

I usually rent the film at a local Redbox in SD and if it's good will order a Blur ray copy. Some people or their kids must be using these Redbox DVDs for a Frisbee !

I don't have time to watch movies hardly at all. This was my first rental in ages. I just kept seeing the previews for "Inglorious Bastards" and I found myself with free time ( remember that? ) so I rented it. I agree with you on the red box DVD's some of those are terribly scratched.
