THis is the exact same tv as the xbr910 with one nice little difference. The xbr910 only showed HD at 1080i...this model shows 720p OR 1080i natively on a 34" widescreen tube. It's a very nice tv indeed. More often than not, I prefer 720p so far.

Now, as with anything I buy lately...there is one issue. A green blob on the right side of the screen. I wonder if turning the tv on and off a few times (degausing) will cure it. If not, how else can I cure it. Looks like it must have been caused by a magnet of some sort? The persons house where I bought it had nothing magnetic anywhere near it.

Also, the purity is not great...anyone know if there is a service mode setting for purity? Or can I manually do it in the chassis? Perhaps moving a tv half way around the world is tough on the purity...

Umm...ahh...you do know they set the magnets different for the different hemispheres?

I have two 24" CRT monitors from the US and they had major colour issues.

Once I fixed by adjusting the CPC magnets, but that caused a keystone issue I can't adjust out.

The other I stuck a rare earth magnet under the front, which corrects it just enough.

Did you ship it from Oz? Surely that cost more than the TV is worth...

Hey Ben, did this come from someone relocating from Australia to Ottawa for work?

yes... I bought it just down the street. For most content it looks excellent. 720p is really good with upconverting SD...definitely better than 1080i.

I see the same keystone issue...it's a horizontal keystone...very minor though.

So, what do I need to do/try here?

Mark,

were you able to get into the service mode to work on the geometry issue?

The discoloration is because the mask is partially magnetized. You will need a good external degaussing coil. Local repair shop may let you borrow one or you can take it there. However, it can sometimes be magnetized to a point where even a good degausser wont remove it.

There is also the SLIM possibility where the mask may have become partially detached.

This will also cause poor purity so one may fix the other.

I think I can borrow a coil....last night while I was watching the tv the discoloration became less as time went on. Would this mean it's more likely to be a magnetic issue?

Its really hard to say. All you can do is try degaussing. I have seen this many many times in all its forms. Some fixable, some not. But only twice with a detached mask.

The internal degausser is weak, so it wont help with a strong magnetized area. The internal degausser may not even be working. I have seen this many times also.

If this is the KD-34XBR960 I think I have the service manual on pdf. I got it from Craig of CIR Engineering awhile back. I'll check when I get home this evening.

It might be closer to the XBR910, but that service manual would be quite helpful anyhow...much appreciated if you can find it.

I have the service manual for the DA-4 chassis. Covers model #s KD-30XS955, -34XBR960, -34XS955, & -36XS955. The file is about 13.6MB. Know of a good way to send it?

Mine are monitors, not TVs.

The geometry controls are available to the user.

every crt owner should own one of these sets...they're awesome. There is an amazing thread over at avs detailing many service mode settings and procedures, very comprehensive!

Green blob....I think I can adjust it out through the landing grid. THere is an internal grid like a convergence grid that you can access. You select one of the 7 points and hit enter, then it goes to a light grey screen where you can adjust landing. I think I almost corrected the blob.

Now the horizontal trapezoid shape seems to be adjusted by htpz...it induces a bit of bow, but then you can adjust upper and lower bow.

Time to fire up video essentials and really get to work! I think I can make this souther hemisphere beauty shine in Canada Smile

I always wanted a 960. Similar set. You do realize we need screen shots right?

a 960 is the same thing as this...add hdmi or dvi and an internal tuner but subtract native 720p. Strange..but the native 720 really makes SD look amazing. I've owned a lot of widescreen crt's, and not only is this the highest rez...but SD is stellar, even zoomed.
