I saw last week that Brandsmart had a sale for I believe it was a Sylvania bluray player. The price was $99. I didn't go over there and see it, but it sounds like a pretty good deal. Is that a pretty good price? Has anyone heard anything about this player?

one of my friends locally has a Sharp Aquo's he bought for $125. from wallyworld, works well for him with no problems. I would be cautious of spending even less, look for oneline reviews though, might be fine as long it doesn't skip or lock-up.
Of course I wouldn't expect stellar video processing but at that price who cares Surprised

It was in the AJC ads last week. I think this was a sales price. My mom wanted to get a dishwasher, so I was going to take her over there in the van. I figured I would get a chance to look at it

Oh, I am not knocking it. Just the fact that you can get a sub-$100 Blu-ray player is amazing. Maybe had Toshiba had been able to do that they could have better salvaged the lost format race.

Be careful, I bought a Toshiba DVD player last year for $50 and it failed a few days after it's 90 day warranty expired. Popped the cover and a chinese motor failed that is no longer produced. That'a DVD player, but a BR is not far off.

Plus, I'm starting to see previous generation Sony and Samsung BD players a year old on Craigslist for ~$150. I'd rather have used Sony or Samsung (in nice condition) than a new über-cheap junk player.

Man, I didn't think we'd be at $79 Blu-ray players already in the product life cycle - even from Funai.

I guess we should starting seeing cheap portable BD players and car headrest BD players for not much more, then.

I paid $79 for an open box off brand at BB for my 78 year old Mother a month or two ago. Got it to her place watched about 15 minutes of Slumdog, it hung...Then wouldn't load a disk after that...I took it back and got my money back. She really had a hard time dealing with the menus anyway.

It was slower than hell to loading compared to my HTPC. I'd like to get her a player because she really enjoy's HD on her flat panel, and says she can really notice a difference. She just has major issues navigating with the menus.

Mike.... Agreed. I avoid BB whenever possible. I probably don't set foot in the door of a BB more than once or twice a year, and I usually leave annoyed.

I was in Costco yesterday and aside from the $179.99 Sumsung BD-P1590 they also has what I'm going to guess is an entry-level Sharp Blu-ray player for $129.97. So, unless Sharp is lumped together with Sylvania as a almost-no-name company, there is a cheap BD standalone option for someone.
