Just got a...
phpBB : Critical Error
Could not connect to the database
Is it just me, or has the forum been REALLY pokey for everybody else, too? I'll get the page to load, but the UI button graphics will take sometimes 15 seconds or longer to fully load.
Just now I tried refreshing, and I got the nav header almost immediately, then it took 11 seconds for the body content to load, and another 9 seconds before the button graphics were in. 20 seconds to load this page 5 posts.
I get the header loading fast - it's static - and the body content loading slower from the database. But, why are the UI graphics so slow to load?
Are we on a server that's getting busy again, Kal?

It's fairly busy.... and forum pages hit the database so it's extra load.
Let's see, here's last month stats (January 2010):
Bandwidth used: 401 Gbytes
Visitors: 189,212
Unique visitors: 89,744
Page loads: 1.18 Million
Hits: 9.9 Million
Some other daily stats for last month:
Average Hits per Hour: 13268 (max: 35361)
Average Hits per Day: 318446 (max: 494888)
Average Pages per Day: 38168 (max: 53091)
Average Visits per Day: 6103 (max: 10298)
Average Bandwidth per Day: 12,9 Gbytes (max: 19.5 Gbytes)
So the take away is that last month we had 89,7644 people who visited a couple of times each on average and used 401 gigabytes of traffic. Bandwidth is not a big deal (We can use up to 1500 gigs under the current plan). It's server load. Every time someone comes to the forum it requires a database request.

Nice, Jeremy!
Wow, that is amazing, Kal.
This one really blows my mind:

That's 2.26 pages/second, all day long. Actually, that's an average, so it's much less than that in the middle of the night, and much, much more than that during the busy part of the day in US/Canada, I'd imagine. Probably 3-4 pages/second.

Correct - in the middle of the day (North American time) the visits is about twice as high. Here's the graph for how access looks over the day:
Here's a per day usage over the month of January 2010:
I sent 3 newsletters out to our 20K subscribers in the month of January. Bonus points to anyone who can figure out which 3 days this was.

Still a drop in the bucket compared to some sites! The fact that dedicated servers at our hosting company (atcihosting.com) start at 1500gig/month is a sign of the type of traffic that's expected by some sites.
Check out the top 10 files downloaded (see below) - some are common forum files, but some are CRT projector manuals that were downloaded hundreds of times in a one month period! Some people must simply load it directly from our site every time they want to read it!
Code: | # Hits KBytes URL

Either that, or there's ton of hot-linking going on from other sites but google searches of these documents only come up with our site so I doubt it.
For example, the Sony 1272 service manual was downloaded 608 times in January. That's almost once an hour all month! The Marquee 8500 user manual was downloaded twice an hour!
The first two are the main forum files that show topics and forum listings.
The HCFR setup document is from my greyscale guide. I host the software here for people to download since I wrote the guide for one specific version of the software and I want the guide to be 100% standalone. Nice to see that it was downloaded 1800 times (58 times/day) over the month of January. People are reading my guide it seems! It's been viewed over 300,000 times in just under 2 years.
