We moved to a dedicated server on October 21, 2009 and we're still having intermittent database outages. I need some idea of when they're happening so that I can track them and help resolve them.

If you get a "Could not connect to the database" error please post here with the data and time as well as how long the outage lasted instead of emailing me. If someone's already covered an outage no need to post a second time. Thanks!

Kal

Thanks! Exact same error Chris? If it's not that same error message it could be anything else....

Not sure if it was the same. Firefox just stated that it could not connect to the site. IE reported something similar. Also tried on another computer on a different network and got the same response using IE.

I haven't gotten that error since the switch, but I did just get REALLY slow response from the server... As in, it took almost a minute for the forum index page to load. 3:04-3:05 CDT.

Yeah...same here...very sluggish but no errors...I'm really not a big fan of MySQL....this was about 4:10 EST.

Just did it again twice...7:53 and 7:56 PM EST took almost minute to edit this post....No errors...

Kal...Is this on a real dedicated server or a virtual dedicated server?

Mike

Same here. Haven't seen any database errors for a few days but I just waited about 3-4 minutes or more for a page to load.

Sorry guys - a lot of the slowdowns are me. I'm doing all sorts of maintenance.

I've been working with my hosting company and their response is simply that there's too much data to wade through ever time someone goes to use the forum. D

So I've been doing something that I was hoping (and figuring) I'd never have to do: Nuke old posts. Any threads over 800-900 days old where nobody's replied I've been removing. This doesn't include polls, stickies, annoucements, and some of the forums that contain mostly old stuff. The hardest hit was the OFF TOPIC forum which is no big deal I'm assuming. Few people will go back and re-read old stuff.

Our database has come down from nearly 500mb to ~250mb now.

Kal

If nobody's posted in them for 2-3 years odds are you don't need them. Anything truly of value CRT related has probably already been copied to the main site too here:

If I set up a dedicated forum/database for it which I'm not going to do given the low volume of users that would actually use it. AVS has 1000x times as much traffic, multiple dedicated servers, and full time staff. I run this place on my own in my spare time.

Do you have a full back up of the forum I could get off you? That was 3 years of my life.

No worries Kal, just throwing some questions out there.

So far no errors for me and actually faster load times, Maybe I am closer to the server location?

Nope. Not related. I'm looking at some of the query response time and noticing that there may be some index optimization that could be done because a lot of the mods I've installed were not completely optimized it seems. More work!

That's pretty much what I did by nuking about 80% of the off-topic threads. Wink

Something else that will help: Nuke some of your PMs everyone! We have 76mb of them.

It's not 3 years worth of stuff. It's threads that haven't been posted to in over 2-3 years. Most of it was likely old useless stuff. A lot was from the OFF TOPIC forum.

Sticky's and polls were not removed even if someone had not posted in 3+ years.
