Ok, this is on my Abit F-I90HD motherboard with integrated ATI graphics. Got an E6300 CPU with 4GB of CAS4 RAM under XP Professional w/SP2.

I connected the drive, powered the PC up, installed all of the software, selected Region 1, and no matter what disk I pop into the unit it isn't recognize and thus will not play. I've rebooted at all promptings and then a couple of extra times for good measure.

For DVD movies I have hard-set the Autoplay to use the Cyberlink HD Suite software, but as I type this I may have forgotted to remove certain industry unfriendly software Razz like DVD Decrypter and Daemon Tools. Twisted Evil Not sure if this is the case, but maybe I need to perform a clean OS install.

Thoughts?

If I reboot with either a Blu-ray or HD DVD disk in the drive it will repeatedly try to read the disk, but never visually errors out yet continues to try over and over again.

If I eject the disk and close the tray again it tries to read it once and errors out with the following message:

BTW, when either a Blu-ray or HD DVD disk is loaded into the tray My Computer (Windows XP) doesn't show a title, but simply returns a CD Drive. This is not expected in that the Pioneer drive I have shows up as a DVD-ROM drdrive. I checked the system requirements and meet/exceed them.

I just tried a regular DVD and that DVD's title shows up in My Computer, but if I try to play it using the Cyberlink software it does nothing. I can play it with the Windows Media Player, though. Thus, for a regular DVD its recognized by Windows as such, but the Cyberlink software can't play it. If its an HD DVD or Blu-ray its not recognized at all.

Ok, so the Cyberlink Advisor continues to report the software isn't present when it is installed. I decided to try and manually launch it and get prompted to register online. Took a couple of attempts, but I was successful. Still, the Cyberlink Hi-Def Suite shows no software.

Giving up on that function I drill down to the C:\Program Files\Cyberlink\PowerDVD folder and launch the software from there and get the following response saying the 30-day trial has expired. Hmm, just installed on a clean drive with a freshly installed operating system and driver set and 30-minutes later the Cyberlink software says its been 30-days and now expired.

I am thankful to the wife for getting me this for Xmas, but its an RMA in the waiting. I'll go buy the Samsung BD-P1400 for $270 and hold off on a second HD DVD player. What a waste. Crying or Very sad

Oh, there is no CD key. When you install from the Cyberlink Hi-Def Suite it uses a key that is a completely different format. Cyberlink really has some polished software. NOT

Have you installed the UDF driver for the HD file format? I was having problems getting the X-Box 360 drive to read disks untill I installed the UDF driver.

I would think that if it were needed it would have been offered when I selected to install everything. Where would this be located?

The attached Windows XP UDF 2.5 driver should work for both Blu-ray and HD DVD discs

(try AnalogRock's driver first though)

I will install the UDF driver and see what comes of it. The way the Readme file relates, this is the format that Toshiba uses for HD DVD. What about Blu-ray? Also, how would this driver, which would enable the identification of a specific filesystem on a disk, relate to the Cyberlink HD Adviser reporting no software player being present, the manual launching of PowerDVD reporting 30-day trial has expired (had only been 30-minutes), and the fact that the only software that will play back regular DVDs is Media Player.

If nothing comes of the UDF driver I'll try this under Vista. I have trial versions of all of the Vista versions, but somehow I think I'll run into the same 30-day trial has expired response from Cyberlink, and no software installed by it Suite launcher.

WanMan, you should have been asked for the CD key on initial setup - did this happen?

Did you have a previous version of PowerDVD on your drive?

Wanman,

The UDF driver is part of windows. You have to go to Windowsupdate after installing the drive and three files will be added. You have to have this for windows to read the drive.
If you don't have a "legal" windows install you will have to manually put the UDF driver on your system as pointed out.
I have the LG drive and have been running it since it came out without issues. On the PC I installed it on, I was already running the XBox360 HD DVD drive, so the drivers were already installed. It was just a matter of plugging in the LG drive.

PowerDVD, now that is another story!! I can't wait for someone else to come out with something to replace that POS!!

I reformatted the hard drive and installed Windows XP, SP2, etc. cleanly. I then installed the software that came with the drive.

The software that came with the combo drive is not just PowerDVD, but rather a suite of software. That suite of software had what I guess you might call a master key, which is in another format than what PowerDVD would use.

Hey, I installed the UDF driver and with a Blu-ray disk (Casino Royale) in the drive I can access the contents. I had similar success with an HD DVD (Batman Begins). With this little bit of success, I ran the HD Adviser for both formats and still no software player was found.

I got a little curious and navigated through the Cyberlink CD and inside of the PDVD folder I noticed the *.reg for the two formats. I merged them into registry and re-ran the Adviser and now it reports as having a software player. Shocked

Terry, I will search the Windowsupdate route and see if anything comes up. Hey, did you get that PM I sent you a couple of weeks ago?

Yes. its the PowerDVD HD Suite - do you get a desktop shortcut for the player app?

Has the PowerDVD.exe file been installed? If so, launch it and see what happens.

Is your Windows XP authenticated? Is it a legitmate version?

Yes, all legit. The software is installed, but when I manually launch it its trialware expired. I've got to try and call Cyberlink and LG today. Reading Cyberlink's forums tells a tale of no support for OEM bundles, but I'm apparently not the only one running into problems. Curious, why have me go through a registration process if they will not support it?

BTW, I tried to install Vista, which I have done before on this PC, but its now telling me the APCI (ACPI?) is not standard and no longer installs. Thumbs Up And while I am keeping calm about this, the wife is pissed. This means her Xmas present to me is a bust. She just wants to send it back and get another standalone.

NewEgg had little sympathy regarding my calls with Microsoft, Cyberlink, and LG. Had LG and Microsoft on the phone (money) and they couldn't get it working. At one point I had Microsoft IN my PC, but the two half-brains just couldn't make it work. Final bit of advice came from LG to return it. Fine.

So, this afternoon I contact NewEgg and for $45+Shipping they'll take it back. Restocking fee for a product that doesn't work as advertised, where the manufacturer and OS publisher couldn't get it to work. Told the wife to accept this as lesson learned. Had she used Amex like I had been saying to use online, one telephone call would have gotten us a full refund.

Happy Holidays. --Less Calm.

Well if you want to see if its a software issue, Uninstall your current version of PowerDVD. Go to this web site and download this version of PowerDVD Ultra and install it. Use the key that is on the page. See if this works to verify where your problem is. Good Luck.

I suppose I could attempt this. Someone already tried to help me offline with a key they have, but that got me no better results. Let me think about it. I'm already asking the wife to hold off for a day so I can check MC for buyer protection. Heck, maybe I'll see if they'll credit me $100 to try and buy a non-OEM version.

I could try this on another PC, but its only got a single core P4 3GHz and that wouldn't meet the product minimum requirements.
