Hey guys,
Steve (ecrabb) is now one of our moderators - congrats Steve!
As most of you know, we don't really moderate here at CurtPalme.com. Topics of discussion aren't nuked or managed. Steve's simply around to help out with the spammers and do other minor maintenance work.
Welcome to the team Steve and thanks in advance!
Kal

Thanks, Kal - Thanks, guys.
I just told my wife and she said, "Well, you're on that damn site enough; you may as as well do something useful!"
I'm mostly just happy to have a weapon in what seems like a war with the scammers. Every time I see a post for Blackberry's and iPhones, or those obnoxious DVD ripping posts (both of which seems to be happening much more often lately), I get a little angry... ala, "Get out of MY forum, ya bastard!". Now, I can help keep the place a little more scammer-free... Which, I'm happy to do. Jeremy and Kal can't do everything! (Though they've done a pretty awesome job so far!)
I promise not to delete anything I disagree with.

Oh, man... It certainly isn't just here. After one of the last scammer' posts, I googled the phone number, and there were literally over 1500 posts to nearly that many different forums all over the world. Page after page after page of scam posts.
I don't know how long the turd had been at it, but can you comprehend sitting at a computer and doing nothing but finding forums to spam, registering new user accounts, activating your membership, and cutting/pasting your scammer drivel into a new post???!?!

Do you know if they are bots? It might be easier to protect for them if they are.

Mike... I'm not an IT/web developer type, so I'm out of my depth, here... But, can a bot automate the convoluted/complex process of registering a new account (username), activating it, then making a new post - all on a phpBB installation with variables such as version, install location, etc?
I guess I assumed these were turds in Nigeria or whatever manually scamming people as opposed to a sophisticated attack.

They probably pay someone ( very little ) or a few someone's, to sit at the computer and SPAM SPAM SPAM.

Yeah, they might be paying somebody 10 cents an hour to spam. Or some bright Russian boy might have come up with a forum-spammer tool -- collect a list of forums, see which ones use which forum software (there are just a few forum packages that would cover the huge majority of forums), plug in the right signup process for each forum, and away you go.
Probably not, though. If somebody had come up with that, every forum everywhere would be getting buried in spam.

It’s been so long since I signed up I can't remember what it took...So I just looked at the sign up page…Looks like pretty standard stuff. Does a new member require email verification? That seems like it would slow down a few spammers.
Many sites now have what I call security images that protect against bots, random series of number and letters in an image that are only for the most part only human readable, I’m sure everyone here has seen them. Here is a little article I found that talks about them.
http://www.devshed.com/c/a/PHP/Security-Images-in-PHP/
Some sites require moderator approval before posting that could turn into a major job for a moderator and for some of the customers for vendors like Moome or HDFury, would be frustrating and only delay their answer for technical support questions.
