Link Posted: Fri Aug 21, 2009 3:35 pm Post subject: Back wall curtain - what color? Need advice today! |
|
|
I'm going to make a curtain to go across the back wall of my HT, which is about 14' deep and 13' wide. It's mostly dark brown, but I have a red oriental rug that takes up most of the floor.
It's kind of monochromatic right now, and it'd be cool to get some more red into the room - but I don't know if I want to have a big red wall directly across from the screen.
Should I do a dark brown as the rest of the room is, red, or just do black to reduce ambient reflections to the maximum? Does the color of the back wall have much of an effect - ie, will red skew everything toward red? Technically my calibration should kind of account for that automatically, but...

I read over at AVS once that the wall/fabric color can affect the tint on your screen. I remember someone recommending a dark blue or black.
Go with a patterned dark brown to match. I think black may look out of place.
Also make sure the fabric you use isn't flammable. Get a sample and put a match to it.

I would go with black or a dark grey or blue I suppose would work okay too.

Deep red should work fine. You don't want something that's going to reflect light from the screen, off the curtain (and colored by it), and back onto the screen. Black is the best, but a dark color isn't going to reflect much.

The texture of the material will affect the reflectivity also. Velvet would reflect much less than a smooth flat cloth.

This is suede, so it's not terribly reflective. Black is out (wife veto ), so it's either brown or red. The brown pretty much matches the walls, so it would integrate nicely... I'm ambivalent. I feel like some more color would be nice, but a big-ass red wall in back just seems odd.

Yes the fabric will have a lot to do with how much gets reflected. Velvet seems to be the best.

peri, will you be doing the sewing yourself? I'm asking as I need someone to do some sewing for me.

Screw that. I'm using double-stick tape. Get the right stuff and it works really well - plus, you can undo any mistakes!

I read somewhere [I think a home theater mag] that you should not use any primary colors in your theater. Something to do with the eyes ability to discern the primary colors and distracting from the color balance perceived while viewing movies. So no to the Red and Blue and I guess Green too.

Ended up going with brown for a couple of reasons. You'll see whether it works in a bit when I get everything done and take some pics.....

What the hell is up with these posts lately? It's like there's some kind of half-assed context sensitive AI running amok making multiple accounts and posting near-gibberish.
Now that this thread has been resurrected almost a year later... the rear curtains look pretty good; I finally got 'em up last month. There're a couple of other things I'd like to finish before I post pics though... maybe next summer.
