Hi all,

I am looking for an air conditioner for my HT room. Size is 18'Lx12'Wx8'H. The Sony pj is pumping out alot of hot air and i would like to cool the room without adding too much noise.

Is a split system the way to go or has anyone installed a wall mounted one? Is there an easy and inexpensive way to accomplish this?

Any recommendations appreciated.

TIA,
jer

There's a couple of the pages I was looking at last week.

Are you in a house or an apartment?

Thanks for reply guys.

Jer, Analog,

I live in a house in Canada. I've been eyeing the Panasonic Split Air, C9CKPG. Low price and low noise is what i'm looking for. I may try a portable first because they are alot cheaper.

Have you installed yours yet and which one did you get?

I was already to buy then the weather cooled off. I was thinking of the Panasonic as well CS-MC12DKK 230 volt 2 piece with a quiet mode of 29dB

I think i will need one regardless of the weather. When you have a full room of 6 ppl watching a 14hr marathon(Star Wars Ep. 1-6) the Sony generates so much heat, it can get uncomfortable.

I will get some quotes today. Who knows i may bring home a portable to test out.

I just looked up that model C9CKPG it's 8800 BTU my question to you is do you have this room closed off or is it open to the rest of the house? I ask because I have owned 8000 BTU window air conditioners that worked fine with my room, the hallway and maybe 1 back bedroom but if I had all the rooms opends up it just stayed on constantly and didn't cool enuff.

That's why I was looking at 12 000 btu/ On the other hand I may put up some insulation and drapes to close off the room from the rest of the apartment then I could go smaller or portable like you sugest. Guess it all depends on the weather this August and September.

I've been looking at doing this for awhile. Dual zoning your A/C may be a pain if you need lots of motorized dampers. For me, all that is upstairs is a gameroom, bathroom and the theater, so dual zoning only requires 4 motorized dampers and the only thing I have to install in a room is the thermostat. If I want to do it myself, I could do it for less than $500.

How much are these devices you guys are linking to? Also, don't you have an ugly in room unit with these?

Thanks,
Dave

The one im looking at is the Panasonic 8800 Btu Split Unit.
Cost is $1200 CDN and install is another $800 CDN or so.

The portables can be an eye sore but these split ones are pretty sleek.

My aunt had a heat pump installed in her house for $1600 although your furnace needs to be heat pump ready the pumps themselves only cost about $600 and a new furnace would be about the same. There is a huge markup on this stuff if you get in touch with the wrong supplier. So if your handy this would be the way I would go as long as you already have a forced air system(ductwork).

Hmmm, not cheap. Is that really less costly then putting your HT on a seperate zone? Seems that you could do that for about this amount or less and would be a more efficient and desireable set up. No?

Hey...custom paint job anyone? It would probably void the warranty but it would look nice in satin black.

I just did a little figuring the 12000 btu split model on 220volt uses about the same energy as the 10 000btu window air conditioner on 110volts. The split model must be more efficient . Cool ( no pun intended )

Take a look at the LG Art Cool systems. Looks good on the wall and well made too.

I watched a MRSLIM commercial last week and they provded a telephone number to get setup. Starting price was $2300! Sorry, the idea of living in the poor south was a complete joke .. again.

I once asked a mechanical company what it would cost to upgrade my current upstairs zone: $3,000. I asked him what it would cost to install a new zone if the upstairs didn't have a unit: $3,000. Seems that the bulk of the costs were the same. So, to get a 'real' AC unit to cool my upstairs is increasing.

I am sitting in a extra bedroom over a den. This zone is set to 75ºF and feels it at the thermostat, but is 5ºF warmer just outside the room with that thermostat and >5ºF in the room I am sitting in. Now, if the room with the thermostat is the coolest room in this zone and can't get <78ºF on warm days ... then this is the f-ed zone.

Why exactly are AC units so damn expensive in the first place? Its not like we are talking about serious technology here, or something invented yesterday.

I think companies use their "pro" line HVAC to offset the cost of selling the low end consumer gear.

The Panasonic was installed today and it's working as advertised.

It's very quiet on "Quiet" mode.

I'm surprised at how powerful this unit really is.

Cost is a bit high but comfort is worth it. Very Happy
