Yes, the $100 price drop has been unofficially hinted at for about a month or two now.
Is the PS3 Slim also going to be $299? Effective immediately the regular PS3 price is $299 ($100 savings). The Slim version isn't due out for another few weeks I think.

The slim will go on sale Sept. 1 and priced at $300. I kinda like the matt finish. The gloss finish scratches too easily. I hpoe it is still a robust machine.

Cool I was thinking of getting one for my G/F now I can be cheap and she'll never know.
Say, do the new ones have card readers in them like the 60gb's? ( a MUST! )

The electronics inside will be the same, the question will be if the manufacturing is up to snuff. The original PS3 had some issues with units dieing. - hopefully the PS3 slim's not going to have issues.
From Wikipedia:

I'd rather have the PS3 Obese that comes with a large heat sink for passive cooling.

Huh. You can use a a PS3 thick as a room heater. The thick is forced cooled out the side. I had a DVR sitting beside a PS3 and am resonable sure the PS3 was the reason I had a HDD failure in the DVR. The slim vents out the back and consumes I think about 1/2 the power.
BTW: Amazon is taking pre-orders for the slim/free shipping. Also I wasn't charged sales tax. Only 1 per household though. Gamestop is also taking pre-orders and is allowing 2 per household but shipping was going to cost $20 plus sales tax (About 9% here in TN). I went with Amazon. This will give me time to evaluate the new PS3 anyway. I can get another later.

So, does anyone know if the slim is missing features in terms in video/audio playback that the original PS3 60GB had? I wouldn't mind buying a slim for $300.

From what I've read, the Slim is more like the current consoles than the original 60GB. No card slots and only two USB ports. Not compatible with PS1 or PS2 games. Also the option to install Linux operating system is no longer available. It should be a more profitable for Sony since it is much less costly to build from what I understand. Sony claims it offers same performance as the original for game playing and audio/video.
Not once did I ever use the flash drives and only used the USB ports to charge & link my controller. I never play games so the Slim should work for me. My biggest issue with the 60GB was the amount of heat it produced.

Also uses 34% less power so less heat.

Yeah the 60gb does cook pretty good. I always run a fan on mine. This time of the year I don't like to run it at all.

Interestingly, Sony is selling the current PS3 80GB for the same price as the Slim. Is there any reason someone would want the 80GB machine instead of the Slim? From what I can tell, the Slim does everything the 80GB does but in a smaller, lighter, & more efficient package. Still, I'm sure there will be those that will swear the 80GB is a better machine in some way. I think the original does have a nicer look but that gloss finish was so easy to scratch. When they were about to quit making the 60GB. it was an easy decision to purchase those due to the 100% backward compatability (actually sold them for more than I paid). Luck up on that on. As stated earlier, I sold 2 of my 60GB machines and the next morning I read about the price drop. My son still has his 60GB.

The 80GB has PS2 emulation for about 80% of the games.

Well, I do not own any <PS3 games and have yet to use the card slots on my original PS3. I just wanted to make sure it still offers the same, or better, video and audio features (including media server). Wife is receptive to buying it--she's ordering it right now.

I use my USB ports all the time. Grab some cool new trailers from apple.com/trailers, save them out as mp4, put them on a USB flash drive, and play them right off the flash drive. Fun when some peeps are coming over to play some trailers for brand new movies.
The flash memory slots... Not so much. I think I've only used those a few times. It's pretty handy for reviewing photos, I guess... The PS3 has a REALLY nice photo viewer in it.
It's worth noting that while the Slim uses 34% less power (and probably dissipates nearly that much less heat), the box is much smaller, so any gains on keeping components cool from heat dissipation reduction were eliminated with the smaller case. If they'd have left the case the same size, then the PS3 would have run cooler.
The old machine DEFINITELY cranks out the heat. You could heat a small space with the thing. Fortunately, it's massively quieter than my 360... I mean, no comparison. I can't hear the PS3 from more than a few feet away; I can her the 360 outside the room... It's almost as loud as my projector. No kidding.
It will be interesting to see if the Slim's dinky case required any funky fan changes that increased noise.

That's funny I've never noticed the PS3 vs the Xbox360 as I have them in 2 different rooms and I always have 3-10 fans running anyways.

I honestly did not know you could save movie trailers off of Apple's website. I have used the USB port for a thumbdrive for JPEG images off of the wife's Nikon, but that is about it.
