Ken was just here and everything looks great on the PS3 and cable box. With the HD-A2 over HDMI into the EXT-HD, the brightness is way too high. I have to turn the brightness down to 40% to get true black (it's normally at 65%). If I change to component output, the problem disappears. It does the same thing with the HDFury, but if I set the player to "enhanced RGB range" the problem disappears. However, changing the RGB range while using the EXT-HD does nothing.
I have tried the following:
Updated firmware on the HD-A2
Trying the other HDMI input on the EXT-HD
Trying a different HDMI cable
I can use component in the meantime, but it means having to switch the cables between the player and the cable box, so I'd like to be able to use the second HDMI input . Any ideas?
edit: just kidding about using component... I forgot about that lovely piece of technology known as HDCP.

It gets better when I lower the gamma, but never near where it should be. At lower gamma 90% of the problem is with the green tube. If I turn that tube off, black is almost there, but the red is still a little too bright.

I just posted a problem, and now that I have read your note, it is nearly identical. I will try the RGB color space change on the Toshiba, but yeah, I need all three inputs. One for the PS3 (HDMI) one for the Toshiba HD-DVD (HDMI), and one for my Cable Box (Comp).
It looks pretty washed out on the PS3 HDMI too for me...

Did you ever find a solution to the problem. I noticed the same thing with my A3 and an older DVI internal card. Red was a little hot and the brightness had to go down about 30%

ok! so you compare with component input, there may some difference between two type of input (hdmi and component), since they use different DAC, the component path has no DAC (the DAC is located at video source side)
