Whats the cheapest way to get sound out of an HDMI source and pass that though to my PJ.
There are a couple out there but they are limited to Stereo. I cannot live with that. I must have 5.1 min.

none of my current receivers have HDMI capability.

Can't you just use the optical ouputs on your source for sound and route the HDMI video to you projector?

I can. BUT there is a problem.
especially with PS3. if using the optical output, It doesn't work properly for some streaming.
The PS3 outputs LPCM as does the HTPC so you only need one that supports high rate LPCM you don't need support for decoding Truehd or DTSMA

I thought the PS3 coulnd't output DD TrueHD and DTSabcdefg

Will all disks work with LCPM or does it have to be encoded on the disk?

The PS3 decodes basically every audio format and will output LPCM over HDMI. It doesn't need to be encoded on the disk.

The lossless audio formats (TrueHD and DTS-MA) can *only* be sent over HDMI. Toslink doesn't have the bandwidth to do it.

The PS3 can output a compressed multi-channel bitstream just like every other source device out there that does multi-channel sound over Toslink.

I have what is considered the first "reasonably priced" (at the time) pre-pro from 1997 that is able to decode a 5.1 lossy Dolby Digital/DTS bitstream (not lossless). No issues at all with the PS3 feed it a Toslink signal that is from 448Kbps (DD min rate) to 1.5Mps (DTS max rate).

This works for DVD, Blu-ray, games, you name it.

Feed your projector HDMI via HDFury2 or whatever, feed your old receiver with Toslink directly from the PS3. It'll work fine. Your receiver is *much* newer than my pre-pro.

I'm doing this now for DVD and BluRay playback and its perfect.
However there is a problem with Video streaming. Some audio is encoded only with LPCM and that won't come out of the toslink.
I need an HDMI receiver.
but I'm asking this crew if there is a cheaper solution.

What exactly is this video streaming? What exactly are you doing? (This is new to me).
