Link Posted: Sun Feb 08, 2009 3:02 pm Post subject: Strange coax cable fitting problem |
|
|
I am running into a problem in which I am using compression-style fittings on quad shield RG6 coax. Specifically, the fitting has an inner collar/sleeve that is suppose to slip under the external black PVC jack of the coax cable, but over the white foam insulator that protects the 18 AWG conductor.
Now, I've used these fittings before (both from Ideal and Paladin) on coax cable the DirecTV installer used and the quad shielded RG6 coax cable I have personally bought from Home Deport and used throughout my house. But this cable the contractor* used isn't working no matter how much elbow grease I employ.
* I hired a local automation contractor to come into my home and install 2xRG6QS and 2xCAT cables to 10 drop locations in my home.
Looking at the coax cable and comparing it to the DirecTV installer used (and the cable I bought from Home Depot) this cable IS different. The stuff DirecTV and the stuff I used I can see the thin foil shielding between the black outer PVC jacket and the white foam core protecting the 18 AWG conductor.
Looking at the coax cable the contractor used has something in addition to what I noted above. This addition appears to be fine tin wire braiding itself over the foil shielding. I'm guessing this is to give the cable strength, but I think it is this stuff that is preventing the compression-fitting from slipping underneath the black PVC jacket to a depth that I need.
As a result of this headache, I am not able to get the fitting down enough to lend confidence the compression fitting will stay on.
Ideas, suggestions

I had an issue like that with some conectors. I drilled them out to fit and all was fine.

Wan, is the braiding between the black jacket and the white dielectric? That sounds like quad shield. If you have other cabling that doesn't have any wire braiding, that's NOT quad shield.
Here's dual shield - one layer of foil, one layer of braid:
Here's quad shield - two layers foil, two layers of braid:
Are you folding the braid back? You know it wraps over the sheath, right?
What kind of stripper are you using (can't wait for the jokes)?

SC, I am using a tool pretty much identical to this one.
When used on this cable the braiding seems to be cut off along with the black outer PVC jacket leaving only the foil shielding, etc.
Quote: | You know it wraps over the sheath, right? | I'm circumcised. Not sure what you are getting at. Are you saying the stripper should cut off the braid (LOL), and that the braid (and foil) should be folded back over the outer PVC jacket?

I believe the problem with the stripper and Wanman is that she keeps coming up a bit short.
