The question first...does anyone have or can get a service manual for this model remote? OR, if you have one would you mind opening it up and taking a few pix of the front and back at the battery terminals and also the gold plated charging pads (these are located on the bottom the remote. I'm not sure about the wiring of those either as they look as if the previous owner played in that area too.
OK..I know this model didn't get the greatest of reviews but that was from Remote-O-philes. Without doing the research yourself (if you haven't already) lets just say the issues they had with it aren't something the average user would ever find to be an issue.
I 'won' it on fleabay ($74) and went into it knowing the owner had hard wired the battery in. (I haven't a clue how he managed to break all three of the contacts off). He also stated that the display didn't respond without a firm press on some parts of the screen. OK...I can deal with that I guess...seeing as the price was right(ish).
So, I get the thing...fast shipper BTW; and get to messing around with it and can't seem to make it charge. Crap on a stick. So I open it up and it looks as though he soldered the wires with a radiator repair iron. Not too too bad but still...a little melted plastic that shouldn't have happened if he knew what the hell he was doing. I also see what looks like dried Pepsi or Coke around the edges of the case opening for the LCD, and more on the corresponding edges of the LCD itself. I clean it all out.
I had to de-solder the battery and remove it to get the main board out so I could inspect WTH he did when wiring it. At this point I'm not sure he even wired it correctly. There's one wire from the middle out in the pic but that's beczuse I had already removed the hot glue he had holding it in. Not soldered or anything...front or backside...just hot glued. Sheesh.
I thought long and hard about trying to return it but I'll wait on that and see how it acts after getting the battery straightened out. I'm sure I'd fail at a return because he DID tell everyone up front he'd soldered in a battery.
I just bought another display off ebay for $32 BUT....
get a load of that shipping charge! OWIE! Now I'm up to $125 for the thing. Still cheaper than a working one on ebay...but not by much, and probably not for long as auctions have a way of popping up and giving you a huge dose of Buyers Remorse when they can be had at a better price if you'd just waited. Oh well. Pull the trigger or get out of the woods right?
I did fire the thing up after making a jig to charge it with. (yeah....still need the charge base for it so there goes another $25) I even went to Logitechs site and updated the firmware and pushed the sources into it I have. We'll see how well the Marquee 8500 commands work they have available.
Hmmm. I got a warning about this being a suspicious site (from the site!) in the banner area when I tested these links but none of my AV software said anything.
I also noticed before de-soldering the battery that when I removed the flexible PCB (ribbon cable) the blue leds lit up on the board. They stay on until they time out then if the remote is moved at all they come on. This doesn't mean much as it might just be reacting to not having the drain of the LCD on an almost totally dead battery. Time will tell after I get it charging.
And that's the story. So if anyone has a 1000 or 1100 and is comfortable removing 4 screws and popping it open long enough to snag a couple pix I'd sure appreciate it. (One small screw is inside the USB port gate on the side).
Thanks in advance! _________________ Greg

I can't help you with the pics, as I only have a Harmony One, but I can assure you that you won't have any issues with it running your Marquee. Both myself and a few other Harmony users confirmed that the later models made by Logitech work in the frequency range that the Marquee needs. It's just the older ones prior to Logitech that won't work. Good luck! I know there are some forum users that have your model, so hopefully they will step forward. Just be careful when soldering that battery. You don't want it to explode! _________________ ~Paul

Thanks Sparky, Nash.
I researched Li-Ion batteries before even attempting to de-solder it. It was surprising to learn that if the wrong charger is used (a non Smart Charger) they can burst into flames up to an HOUR after 'charging'. The DIY RC-er LiIon battery charger maker folks appear to have some horror stories of charging with their home brew chargers and tossing the battery into a bag in their car...and the car ends up burned down to the rims.
Thanks Nash! Sure is appreciated. And the one wire missing in the pic is the middle, or T (I assume T for trickle) wire. I removed that before I got to thinking about posting for assistance. I just want to confirm he chose the correct pad in that cluster of pads to go to. I got no continuity across the gold battery charger base pads to any of the wires at the battery. Seems to me I should have at least gotten some resistance as the battery isn't directly coupled to the charging pads but rather runs through circuitry.
Looking forward to the pix. My wife is gonna have a fit when she finds out my 'good deal' on this thing is turning into what we all here love....a GOOOOD project to sink our teeth into. Any more purchases to make it work tho and I quickly become a fool. Ah well. Not the first time nor the last. As long as I'm having fun I figure. _________________ Greg
