Free app developed by someone at avsforum...could allow for a very precise gamma and greyscale for those of us who go the HTPC route. Would probably allow for tuning out the blue hump AND clearing up low level gamma!

This has swayed me back to the ATI camp...as I want to screw around with custom resolutions and I'm not sure NVidia would be good in that realm.

I haven't tried the most recent release but an earlier release had problems either with my Nvidia card or Vista. I'll try this when I get a chance and report back.

I'm not surprised if you attempted this under a Vista environment, because Vista prevents direct access to hardware. Its part of M$' strategy to control you.

It won't work for Powerdvd/TMT, on an ATi card.
It's just another way to fiddle with the desktop gamma, which accelerated video (DXVA) ignores.
You need to playback mkv files in MPC or Zoom Player using the Haali Renderer or VMR7/9 or EVR - in software.

The guy made a point of saying it altered the hardware LUT *on the card* and so should indeed with with accelerated video. Have you tested it, or are you just going based on previous experience?

Good point. I didn't test it (well I loaded it but didn't fiddle, as I didn't want to mess my gamma).
Please test it and let us know!

I'm traveling for a week (at least... nothing like a business trip with an indeterminate end date...) but you can damn well bet that when I get back, I'm kissing my wife, hugging my baby, and going down to the HT to do some bluray installin', since I got a BD drive for xmas! So yeah, I'll definitely have a go with it. Wall-e has some excellent low APL scenes that test the hell out of gamma, too - things that look great with the right gamma but are utterly unintelligible without.

OK,
This might be a solution. It seems that the aftermarket Omega drivers have a new Gamma functionality.
Anyone willing to give it a try with the ATI cards?

They fixed the problems I was having with an old laptop as well

I still don't reckon any of the gamma tweaks will work in Overlay.
I'll give the Omega drivers a go - I always used to run them.
But I'm happy with remuxing to MKV and running Zoomplayer with the Haali Renderer - then I get Gamma through Powerstrip or VideoEqualizer or PCGG.

Let us know how you get on I am trying to buy an old 7950GT card, as that will fix the problem in the shortrun
