I wish the shipping was "Pronto"
Ordered 2 on Sept. 16 with paypal, now I get an email that says the shipping label was printed today!(Sept. 23)
Still, I think these will be a good replacement for the 2 Marantz RC2000/RC-18SR.

Unfortunately the intial flood of orders exceeded the intial stock that they had in hand ready to be shipped out. Another large batch goes out tomorrow. After that orders should ship out quicker.

TechToys is generally very fast at shipping (the initial stock was all sent out within 24 hours of ordering).

Kal

Sorry about that. All the remaining orders will be shipped no later than noon tommorrow (9/24/08) and all other orders will be shipped within 1 business day from the date the order is placed.

I've had a few questions so let me tell you a couple things about the differences between the TSU-501 and the original TSU-500.
1. The hard buttons are larger and much more sturdy than the original.

OK, since you raised the sturdiness issue: the remotecentral reviews pan this remote pretty badly for reliability. Both the hard buttons and the touch panel are reported to fail consistently. If the hard buttons are sturdier, maybe they've addressed that issue. What about the touch panel? Is it any more reliable than the 500? If I was confident it wouldn't die on me, I would have ordered one already...

Gary

These are based on the 500 but made for the Boston Acoustics Avidea 770 system. I've not read any reports of problems with the 770 system remotes. I've used one for 2 months with no trouble at all. that includes some rough handling by a 6 year old.

This is from the 770 review. . . .

The remote is several cuts above the usual slab 'o buttons. A learning handset that's also preprogrammed with a large code library, it features an LCD touchscreen as well as soft and hard buttons — all backlit. In a thoughtful touch, the remote automatically turns on when you pick it up (there's a tilt switch inside) and automatically turns off after a user-settable delay. And it can use either infrared (IR) or radio-frequency (RF) signals to control the system. RF is particularly useful when the control center is in another room (maximum range is 66 feet). The control center's output for a supplied dual IR emitter even lets you control other equipment in your rack with RF commands from the remote. Of course, you can also create macros, which allow you to issue a string of commands with one button touch. Finally, the remote has a serial port so you can connect it to your PC and customize the touchscreen's layout and the remote's operation using the supplied Freedom Edit Windows software.

Hey guys, here's a link to the manual if you want to check it out:

Pronto TSU-501 / Boston A7RC remote manual (1.5mb, PDF format)

It's also been added to the order page and the FAQ in the first post of this thread.

Shipping status update. All remotes have shipped. That includes the ones ordered last night. From now on, all remotes will ship within 24 hours. Sorry about the delay guys. We just got a serious rush or orders and I was playing catch-up.

TECHNICAL UPDATE.

These remotes learn HEAD-TO-FOOT which is another major improvment over the TSU500. I've gotten a few tech support e-mails saying "These remotes won't learn". If you point them head to head the only way they will learn is if you put a small mirror behind the TSU-501. Very Happy

Seriously though, for learning point your remote at the bottom of the pronto about 2 inches away and it will do great. Learning instructions are in the manual.

One other usefull tip I just thought of. The backlight timer in the LCD screen can be programmed to activate whenerver the remote is lifted. Just adjust the timer up above 120sec. the next step past 120 is ON. In this setting the backlight will activate automatically and stay on as long as the LCD screen is on.

I know this is a US-model but is there any way to get it to 24h mode?

No, there is no option for setting it to 24h mode.

What's the cheapest way to get a RF to IR extender for this remote? Have anyone ever build one themselves?

Wow! That really would be a DIY project. I don't know how to build one but I found out by accident that if you set the remote to IR1 ID1 it will send signals to a RCA D940 extender. They are about $40 on eBay.

I ordered one of these remotes back on the 15th, should I be expecting a tracking number?

Chris.

Yeah, I have the RCA D930 and was wondering if the remote would send the right RF. That would be dandy.
Should be getting remotes any day now, ordered on the 16th.

You can control the LCD contrast but can you also control the brightness of the back lit display ?

Yes, the D930 is the receiving unit for the D940 transmitter. On the remote hold down the mode button until the mode screen appears, select RFIR, pick the device, change th RF settings to RF Channel 1 RF ID 1 and you should be good to go.

Good to know, I have a bunch of the RCA units throughout the house. Thanks.

Incidentally, the D930 receiver also works with the URC MX-800 remote.

You can load any of the TSU500 codes into it with no problem. You are right though, don't update the firmware. The firmware installed is specifically for this remote due to the added rf features and hard-buttons.

If you hold down the mode button it will bring you to a set-up screen. One of the selections is learn. The TSU-501 can learn on an extremely WIDE freq range. Any codes you can't find on remotecentral or in the remote firmware can be "taught" on a per-button basis. After you get the remote setup to suit you, be sure to back it up to a computer file so you won't have to teach it any codes again. If your civic-minded you can also upload your file to remotecentral to help the next guy. Thumbs Up

Finally got around to trying to learn and modify codes for my equipment. So far all seems fine and infinitely more flexible than my Harmony - so I will probably spring for a second for my Theateroom setup.

On my civic mindedness - I am a little slow. Wondering what others views are on learning button presses into the Efficient screens and editing titles versus just downloading from remote central.

I do know my setup is not the greatest as there is no specific coding for my Motorola cable PVR - I have to use cable and motorola and separately learn keys on the DVR device.

I suppose since I can revert with the Freedom edit software (after another $20 to get a USB/serial adaptor for my laptop) I should just jump in - but I would like some feedback from others before I head down this path in case it would be better just to learn/relable what is provided as defaults.

I have an easier time programming things like macros from the software. I also like the ability to back-up the remote config to computer,

The default screens are really good but remotecentral gives you access to better graphics.

As well as pre-made full system control files . . .
