Greetings,

Seeing as this forum seems to be dedicated to the bashing of digital or as they are more affectionately known as "flashlights" I have decided to form a support group for those of us in the following situation.

1: Purchased digital projectors - but doesn't want anyone to know.
2: Purchased digital - and wants everyone to know how GREAT they are.
3: Purchased digital - and wants the world to know how inky the blacks are. "Now thats just SICK!"
4: Contemplating purchase of digital - we can help you Smile

Yes I have jumped on the digital bandwagon, my previous experience was with a lowly X1 that made me sick when I watched it for more than 1 hr.

I have purchased an Optoma HD65, the one with the white segment missing from the colorwheel in the hopes that I will not be able to see rainbows with this one, it should be in sometime next week. Most of the people who have purchased one over at AVS seem to be pretty satisfied with the unit.

The PJ cost me about $600, with a spare bulb "$329.00" so I guess I made out well, I purchased it from the BB liquidation center on e-bay.

So now I will begin parting out my high hour 8500 49k on the chassis that I purchased from Draganm a few years ago. "This will be tough, I am sure as I hate to see this thing that has served me well be pulled into pieces, but I promised Momma I would get rid of it."

All this being said, I will miss the beast, she has never given me a lick of trouble, and even though her tubes were a little cooked she threw a really decent image.

I will see you all around, I am sure to brag about the wonderful picture the HD65 will throw, and how black the blacks are, and how stupid all of you are for not purchasing one yourselves Mr. Green

Draganm if you tell me to mount that thing on the ceiling where it belongs so help me I will send you a plane ticket here just so I can drop this thing on your head! Wink

Not that I care how much KWhs I use, but I am curious.

What consumes more power.

Marquee 8500 or Digital

What generates more heat? Marquee or DLP?

I am just curious, someone enlighten me.

Thanks

unkyjoe,

CRT's are very inefficient. They consume a lot of power and dissipate a lot of heat compared to a small digital like the little Optoma. The 8500 probably draws twice as much power and dissipates at least 3x the heat. You're probably talking in the neighborhood of 500w vs 250w, and 2000+ BTU/h vs. 700 BTU/h.

The way most of us use our projectors, the cost isn't a big deal... as in $10 vs. $5 annually. Even if you factor in additional cooling load on A/C, the difference for most of us would be less than a dinner out. The only major difference would be heat dissipation, and then only if your room ventilation is inadequate. Consider that an adult radiates about 400 btu/hr sedentary. So, that means that the little digital is about like 2 adults in the room, while the 8500 is like 4 or 5.

How close do you sit to your screen and what size is it? I could never go back to 720p - especially on a digital.

ecrabb,

I tried 1080 with my marginal 8500 and also at a friend who has a well dialed in 9500 and my old eyes cant see what the fuss is about.

Power is not that important to me, what is important is the heat load when I get bodies in there, and the fact that in order to mount this beast we would have to pull down the ceiling and have it restructsured to support the PJ. All of this is dooable, but why? "Wifes argument not mine!"

Plus a retube of the unit, it needs all three of them. Plus the age of the chassis 49k hours, plus plus plus.

I want to hang a PJ from the ceiling, play a few games, watch some movies and be done with it. If this means replacing the unit every 2-3 years I am all for it.

I LOVE CRT PROJECTORS, and I always will, they are however not a good fit for our lifestyle, I just dont have the time, the eyesight or the initiative to retube this unit.

I sit about 10ft from the screen, maybe a bit less.

I frankly would rather have a digital on my ceiling, a cold one in my hand, and my wife in my lap Laughing then a wonderful fluid image and a 145lb projector hanging above my head, no cold ones and no wife in my lap.

Mr. Green

Re tube the 8500 and find a used Chief EVCM-100D projector lift. You can raise and lower the projector with the touch of a button.

Of course if you want a decent Black level from a digital just remove the lamp and it saves on power too.... Wink

8500's draw a max of 650W, according to the brochure. The Optoma has a 180W lamp, so with fan &etc it probably puts out upwards of 160-200W of heat. So the Marquee probably kicks out 3x more heat. Bodies emit about 100W, so the Optoma is equivalent to about 2 bodies worth of heat, the Marquee about 6.

There is no need to "restructure" the ceiling to support the PJ. It probably weighs less than you do, and I'll bet you walk on the floor above. Floors are engineered to handle dozens of people in a small space. A projector is a pittance compared to that. The only trick is getting it securely connected to the ceiling, and that's not a big deal with most ceilings.

The chassis age isn't a big concern, since Marquees last lots longer than that, though some maintenance is doubtless in order. But the retube is a pretty major issue. Your Optoma cost less than 3 tubes.

Garyfritz,

I live in a DBLWIDE manufactured home, and trust me the joists will not support the projector as is.

The ceiling is slanted, 7ft at one edge and 9ft at the center of the home. It would require us to lower the entire ceiling to 7ft by running 2x6's across the width of the room, 13ft with joist hangers and then building a box to house the projector up inside the ceiling a bit, I have allready had the plans drawn up by an engineering pal of mind.

It is all doable, and the cost is not signifigant, under $1000 including a hoist in the ceiling to raise and lower the projector.

This was the plan, the picture is quite good now even with the condition of the tubes, however retubing the unit, would require me to do them all to get proper color balance etc. I could by them for around $600 a tube I believe, but this chassis is nearing half of its useful life. I believe I heard someone say you get about 100k hrs out of these chasis. I am sure Curt could help keep in running longer.

Faced with this, $1800 for tubes, plus installing them, which I would need help with, plus the mods to the room, $3000+

Part out the projector, purchase the HD65 and throw it up, new bulbs every two years, or new pj every 3.

Priceless Mr. Green
