Once again the only single slot 512meg card I could find available here locally.
Now that I've ordered it I bet one with DDR4 comes out in a month lol |
Wow that was fast....I have the card in hand and a DVI to HDMI cable. I'll install this when I get a chance. I need to take the whole thing apart, drill some holes in the case and change the mother board to the spare. This one is having issues with the floppy controller. AND YES WANMAN I still use floppy's
Might be done by the end of the week I hope.

Geeze you fix one thing.....
I just hooked up the Green Machine to the internet. I had little connectivity. The first site I couldn't get to is here! ( I think someone hacked me for fun. C'mon which one of you did it? LOL )
So I'm back on my Classic Win98 gaming box. I have the Green Machine on top, and no way to make the internet go. I'm going to swap motherboards tomorrow. Maybe that'll work.
I was looking for instructions on wiping out the Nvidia drivers ( sniff sniff ) and then installing the ATi drivers.

Didn't have a chance to touch this today. I went to pick up my Logitech G25 wheel and got shang highed into Hot Wings and fries.
Tomorow, headach permitting, I'll start the rebuild. I'm swaping the mother board for the backup, changing from Nvidia 8600 256meg to ATi 3850 512meg, paving XP and doing a fresh install and just generally backing up stuff like TV show's I've recorded.
Then I'll install some racing games ( I have DiRT, Need For Speed Carbon, GT Legends and a couple of Rally games )and try out the G25.
This is gonna be fun!

Well it's pretty bare. Unfortunately I grabbed an eSata port with too short a cable ( it was a gimmie ). At least I have some of the holes drilled.
I'll see about putting it back together tomorow.

Gee I really gota stop comming here when I first get in. I spent an hour on the forum when I needed to be putting the Green Machine back together.
I did pick up an external eSata bracket with a cable long enough to reach the mother boards ports tongiht (DUH) it also came with a nice External enclosure too.
I'm off to start the (re)build.

Yes I COULD have but this is much more fun. Plus all the measuring is done for me. I HATE measuring. By the time I take the measurement and turn around I've forgotten what it was.

I had an interesting weekend. The ATi 3850 512meg PCIe card is in, I reinstalled WinXP (twice) and I started testing. I loaded a couple of games. The graphic's looked great at my prefered 1600 x 1200/72Hz/ 32 bit setting. HD-DVD and Blur ay looked good at 1080P/60.
This was over the analog to my Sony G520P 21" CRT monitor.
I also recieved my HD-Fury last week. I hooked that up to 'Input 1' on my montor
and ran the analog cable into "Input 2"
I ran the Etherial analog cable off the DVI-I to VGA adaptor and the HD-Fury off the MC DVI-D to DVI-D cable.

OK great. I wanted to do an A/B comparison of high quality (Etherial 12 foot VGA cable )
vs. HD-Fury (ahem. Monster Cable 12 foot DVI-D to DVI-D ) ( I know MC isn't the greatest but it's literally better than nothing ) with USB power cable off the HTPC USB port (with out this I got a black screen at 1080P )
vs. Moome 2005 DVI card
vs. Moome 2007 DVI w/gama
( both cards installed in a Sony PC1271 switcher )
What I found was interesting. I got the left image shift that everyone talks about with the HD-Fury. It also horizontally stretched the image and I had to compress it using the monitors controls. I saw some vertical banding on the left side of the screen that's not present there with the analog input, and the timings were different on the HD-Fury. Look at the right side of 5117, you'll see a bright line where the image folds back on its self. I estimate an image cut off loss of 5-8%.
No matter how I set the monitor controls I could never recover the missing image.
Ignore the horizontal line in 5118 that runs past his ear. That's not actually there, It's a product of the photography.
To make this a fare comparison I set 'Input 1' and 'Input 2's color's and brightness the same for both inputs.
See Fig.5117, HD-Fury Input 1
& Fig. 5118, VGA, Input 2

I used to run two of those in tandem.
One died and the other is my preview monitor in my theater now.

That's exactly what I wanted to use mine for. I have two as well and one needs to be painted to match the Green Machine.
However there's more to this story. Read on...

My conclusion:
The HD-Fury is a great product, the colors from the digital link are more vibrant than the analog. I'm just curious about the image stretch and shift. Also the highlights ( white's ) apear to be over blown a little.
EDIT: The overblown whites are not an issue. It was a video card driver adjustment fix.
I also tried the DVI to HDMI adaptor, which, is generally not recommended for use with the HD-Fury. It was fine at 1080P/60 with the power cord plugged into the 'fury.
I love the fact that I just updated my 2002 CRT monitor to be HDCP compliant.
Now on to the Moome cards...

So I also had the Moome cards loaded and ready to go. I bought a HDMI to DVI-D cable, a DVI-D to DVI-D cable, and had everything setup with a RGBHV break out cable from the switcher to the G520P monitor.
EDIT: I also tried a no name POS DVI-D to DVI-D cable that you get with the cheap flat screen monitors. Same effect.
Source once again HTPC
ATi 3850
HD-DVD/Bluray
