At this stage in the game, I consider Plasma displays to be a commodity and a research of reliability records shows that so-called 'name brands' are no more or less reliable than less known brands. There are only a handful of display element (i.e. plasma glass) manufacturers in the world and most product manufacturers buy their display elements from an OEM supplier. I personally don't believe a lot of the talk and hype about brand names. It's all about marketing and advertising. Research and/or examination of what you are going to buy should give you sufficient confidence in your purchase. Anyway, as long as I buy my gear in Costco it looks like I'm protected!!

Manufacturers might buy major components like plasma glass from a commodity supplier, but they still have to put other supporting components around it. There can be a significant difference in reliability based on the competence of the design engineers and the willingness of the suits to spend $$ on reliable components.

Can be, but not necessarily. These days I think everybody is making cheap junk. Probably the warrantee support is the most important thing to pay attention to -- in which case your Costco decision might be right on!!

They overheat and shut down and $800 bulbs every 3 months and labor.(the list goes on) I told them!!!

The thought of a color wheel sickens me. It reminds me of the old metal pine trees from way back when. You used to get a flood light and a color wheel that spun around to change the color of the tree. DLP is very old technology, too much mechanical parts. The thought of tiny mirrors moving around is also bad. Correct me if i'm wrong, but wasn't DLP invented 20 years ago when LCD monitors or projectors didn't exist? DLP is old compared to LCD. The thought of changing a light bulb on a Television is also bad, its just like a light bright (remember the colored pegs?).

I can only think of this

"Hey hunny can you bring me another lamp for the TV, it's getting dark again, and i can't see the Stargate." She opens up a closet with 124 Light bulbs for the TV that will last 4 years. After 4 years the bulbs wont be made any more and the TV will be useless.

I like my good old CRT monitors on my computer(specifically the Sony Trinitron from 1996), i never cared to much for LCD's except the fact that they save room. LCD displays should be left for portable devices and nothing else.

Here's another email from today:

I just dropped almost $4k on a Optoma Hd7100 with advanced optics. It has CRT Like Blacks. and is great. Most people claim that it's like a CRT.

My lamp died 90 hours in....

You can claim that LCoS is like CRT, but I've never seen a DLP that looks like CRT. The way the pictures look is just waaaaaay different.

I think the Sim2 C3X is getting there if you don't sit too close.

Hey Guys, I'll give you a digital horror story....

I'll be getting a 46" DLP rear projection set shortly. For the bedroom... not the theater.

The good news is that it's virtually free. The Irony is that it solves several other problems I have with the desired location of the set. I wanted a 16:9 set, bigger than 27", multiple inputs. I have all that in CRT's. The problem is that none of them are 13" deep.

This promises to be interesting...

Marc

Spotted in BJ's wholesale club (an east coast Big Box store, a'la costco)

Set was a DLP, and this image was static. Colors were not changing either...

Ahh... now I get it. Yes, that is a bad off-air signal, and someone pressed "freeze" on the remote if it was a static image. My samsung does this on a crap signal. You can freeze-frame it as well. It looks VERY good on HD, though.

Needless to say, I got my free Samsung in the meantime. I actually like it for what it is.
Properly calibrated it is capable of a VERY respectable image despite it's less than black performance. Great Bedroom set.

Hmmmmm..... Maybe I should find that set and power cycle it! I'n now quite intrigued, since I simply assumed that the DLP had gone wonky.

And the ******* saga continues..........

Welp, todays the day the box store WAS supposed to have a tech at my house bright and early (0830) with parts to fix the Sony HS10 Cineza I bought from them that's rainbowing. Been battling them for a year in an attempt to force them to live up to the extended warranty I purchased......ANNNNND a no show by 0845 so I call their svc center.

Lady tells me that no, nobody is coming because we don't repair them. We repair rear projection TV's in home, but we don't have anyone to repair projectors. Goes on to tell me that somebody called me a week ago to tell me this. I tell her it must have been done by the "tech" who looked at the projector a month ago and he couldn't figure out how to use a phone either. Evil or Very Mad
(By now, my blood pressure medicine and blood thinner are working overtime trying to keep my thumping heart in my chest cavity.)

I tell her I still have the saved message on my answering machine from 3 weeks ago informing me of the time and date of the appt. and that parts were in that Sony recommended they replace.

She tells me I don't understand...they don't HAVE anyone that can fix them. I tell her I DO understand but that I don't give a rats ass about her companies shortcomings and to hire a damn independent shop to install the parts that came in if they have to I just want this over!

She tells me I have to take it in.

I tell her I've ALREADY driven the damn thing all over SE Wisconsin and dropped it off once...only to have it returned a week later unrepaired. And additionally I had to argue with the "technician" to educate him on rainbowing.

She tell me she doesn't know what else they can do.

DO!..I say. You haven't DONE anything!!!!!!!!! I tell her I have IN WRITING on THEIR goddamn sales receipt HOME SERVICE for 5 years!!!

She says yes, I see that you have our Performance Guarantee.

I tell her that she shouldn't be allowed to use those two words together in a sentence.

She tells me she has to escalate the issue to a technical advisor...

WTF is that?????????

Somebody that can make a decision she tells me.

You only have ONE person in your entire company who is capable of making a decision????? Why am I acting surprised I tell her. It shows I tell her.

Sir, I'm trying to work with you here.

Like hell you are! You're trying to wear me down to the point that you think I'll just give up. Well let me tell you something lady....I haven't even BEGUN to work up a sweat over this! Let me tell YOU how it's going to go...
You are going to have an answer for me BEFORE close of business today, or I'm calling Katrina Cravy at Fox 6 News in Milwaukee, and she will DEFINATELY come to my house with a camera crew where I will lay this on so thick that in one single broadcast I will negate your company's entire 2007 advertising budget! I'm sure all the people who just bought hi-tech TV's and such for Christmas will just LOVE to hear that you sell useless extended warranties.

Sir....

I'm not done here!!! You have until 5pm TO-DAY to have the biggest stick you can find call me. Not you...not Sam the Village Idiot Technican Man, not some sales puke....I want your GOD DAMN PRESIDENT to call me himself and explain this scam or the next person he WILL talk to concerning this will be Katrina Cravy! Here's my WORK number....my cell number.....my HOME number again....and because I have ZERO confidence in your companies ability to hire people who can operate a simple GOD DAMN telephone...I will call YOU back at 4:45 if I haven't heard from someone who can make a decision. Are we clear??!!! WHAM!!!

Rolling Eyes Busted my frigging cordless phone base off the wall. Now I'm REALLY pissed.

Come onnnnnnnnn 4:45!!!!!!!!!!! I've already created the email to Fox 6 News (Contact 6 is the name of the segment Katrina anchors for scams and ripoffs).

I don't even give a sh*t about the projector to tell the truth but goddamnit...they're FORCING me to become Michael Douglas in Over the Edge or whatever it was called.

<sigh>

Laughing Nah...I'm cool and the heart is holding up fine.
I just got off the phone with Jessie (female version of a Jessie) from their svc dept. These people are TOTALLY unfazed by anything I threaten them with. Given their service attitude I'm sure they're well prepared and used to frigging people over and have strong legal resources at their disposal.

They want me to drive it allllll the way back to the store I bought it at, so's they can have a technician determine the need to send it out, so they can ship it allllllllll the way down to Texas...again, for Sony to fix it and they're going to pay Sony. There goes 2 more hours of my time and the fuel $$ to do this all over again.

She didn't see the irony of me asking her how the hell they are going to have a technician determine the need to send it out when they already told me they don't HAVE anyone that works on them...so how the hell are they going to pull it off?? <insert chirping cricket effect>

I can see where this is heading....Sony will have the serial number in their records from when I sent it there...they'll tell American TV (the box store I got it at) that it's been refused for warranty service because it smelled like smoke, it will come back unrepaired...and I'll be up against yet another brick wall. If Sony is smart, they'll just shut their mouths and fix the damn thing and take the $1600.00 from American TV.

I tried to argue the point that it isn't a good business decision to spend that much money on repairing a product that will STILL have 3 years left on their Performance Guarantee. (I have a hard time saying those words given the ongoing BS).

"Jess", as she likes being called, started out telling me I could just take it to a local authorized Sony repair shop (they don't exist) pay the $1600.00 out of my pocket, and they would reimburse me. I told "Jess" Ohhhhhh noooo I'm not. I can see right now that if I lay out MORE money, on top of the $2200 the thing cost me two years ago, I'll have to battle for my money. Nope. Ain't gonna happen.

So off to Texas for more flying critters and Taco Bell trash it is.
<sigh>
