I am going to put a section up somewhere on my site, (and maybe just here) to post digital horror stories in. Note that these posts should be kept fairly generic, and are the poster's opinion only (I don't want to get sued!)

I'll start with a quote from an email I got forwarded to me yesterday, I have lots more. Feel free to post your own stories, but keep the manufacturer's name XXed out for the most part:

Long time no speak.
>
>I wanted to let you know if you are still considering going over to the
>digital side, take this into consideration. I was always going to invite
>you to view the setup only I cannot get a digital projector to work long enough to
>invite you.
>
>I am on number FIVE from 2 different manufacturers.
>I am now looking again for a replacment display. I believe I have logged
>only about 600-700 total hours on all machines combined. This in comparison
>to the SONY CRT you viewed that was over 25 years old with 1000's of hours of
>viewing.
>
>If you have not switched keep this in mind.
>What are you viewing?

Horror story # 2:

I got a call from an A/V company that services a very popular sports bar in Calgary. This bar owner actually has three bars, two in Calgary and one in Edmonton. He has a total of about 8 Zenith PRO 880/851 projectors that have been going strong for years with minor repairs, but he decided to put in a high end super bright digital set for those special events.

He spent about $7000 on a brand SXXX.

Note that Calgary is one of the few places that still allows smoking all over the bar, there's no special smoking section as in most other cities.

30 days after the install, the digital set stops working. He takes it in for warranty service, and the SXXX warranty depot informs him that due to the smell of nicotine on the projector, the warranty is null and void, and gave him an estimate of $3500.00 to repair it. Needless to say, he's not getting it repaired.

Horror story # 3:

I local Vancouver restaurant bought a name brand plasma 42" TV for use in their bar area. After 18 months it developed a 2" wide bar down the middle of the screen after it was on for about 2 hours. We took it into the local plasma specialty repair shop that was also the warranty depot for this brand. THey quoted $350 to repair it. We told them to go ahead. I figured $350 was a great deal to replace a video driver board or whatever it needed.

They repaired it within a day, and when I saw the bill of $350, it said 'reseated and cleaned all modules'. NOw, look at this repair two ways:

1) There's no way it took more than an hour to repair and reseat the modules in a plasma. So $350 seems to be a complete ripoff for an hour's worth of work.

2) Looking at it from a technician's point and the fact that this repair depot knows what they are doing, consider the amount of hours in a day that the plasma techician must waste writing off units that are not worth repairing. To make up for that, he now must charge $350 an hour to complete a simple repair so that they can keep their doors open. Scary!

Smoking voids the warranty???

Why? Is this clearly stated? if not i'd file a suit against the manufacturer.

Are there digitals made specifically for commercial venues such as bars where smoking is allowed? I'd think there would have to be, albeit at a much higher cost. If there are, I wonder how these hold up.

I would think any business projector is automatically deemed a commercial-environment product. There is a difference between smoke from smoking and smoke from a building burning down or a volcano errupting. Smile

Which manufacturer voided? BTW, Panasonic does make a class of business plasmas vs. consumer plasmas, but I think this is nothing more than an excuse to charge more on the business line.

a 10 year old CRT projector that needs a repair is not a horror story, it's actually quite impressive for how long these machines run. maybe the subtleties of the English language don't translate very well? a horror story is when you buy something brand new and it takes a sh*t on you 6 months later.

Here's ana analog horror story ...

I got home with my two new-in-box G90's, got someone to physically install them and calibrate them. Spent the entire night watching 1080P glory. Stayed up late gaming on them. Topped it off to the wife entertaining me in the 'G90 Room' to watch some porn, got lucky, went to sleep with the world's biggest sh*t-eating grin on my face, and woke up realizing it was all a fantasy.

The horror. Sad

Well, how about this one:
I had a Philips LCD projector. We move house. I install the projector. Am just installing the screen, when the unit dies. No fault lights. No lights at all. Correctly surmise that the power supply has just lunched itself.
Check the warranty, 18 days left. Call Philips, who tell me to return it to my retailer who will follow Philips' return procedure by calling for a RMA, and despatching it to the nominated repair outlet.
Return it to my retailer, who:
-doesn't follow the return procedure
-despatches it to Philips NZ
Philips say WTF, and promptly send it back.
I do my balls in the shop when I call 2 weeks later and find it lost in transit. Get escorted from the shop by security when I start stringing all my bestest insults together, very loudly, to the manager. I think the final straw was when I called him a ****.
Retailer sends projector to local repair outfit, who follows Philips procedure, gets RMA, ships to LCD repair facility at other end of the country. Just as well I kept the original packaging huh?
Projector finally arrives back. In its packaging. Sort of. It is in its box, without any polystyrene. Just wrapped in plastic, surrounded by confetti. Get asked to leave the repair facility for losing my rag again.
Get the projector home. Fire it up. Everything is green. Serial number has been removed. John seriously not happy now. Call Philips ready to do my balls. End up speaking to really helpful old dude, who waxes lyrical about his panasonic pt102, before ragging on thos bastardly belgian barcos. Feel like I'm on acid.
Return the projector to the repair facility. They send it away. Projector is deemed non-repairable.
I approach retailer for a refund. sh*t-fight starts again.

Finally, get a cheque in the mail. Buy an ECP. And then my troubles really start...

I've been battling the same thing for months now!

You got a check? Sounds like they gave you some sh*t first...I know all about that!
I got sh*t AND cockroaches when my Sony Cinceza went out and came back from "service". I also packed the pj in it's original packing material only to have it come back wrapped in plastic and floating around in a pile of critter infested Taco Bell trash. Only one piece of original foam was still in the box.

The extended warranty I purchased at the time I bent over, I mean, bought the pj is useless too... they refuse to do anything for me.
I was told last week by this company that "We have to defer to Sonys determination on this one because they're the pros." My PO'd response to the tool on the phone was "If you believe that then I'm guessing you don't lock the doors on your home or car because you wouldn't be smart enough to figure out how to let yourself back in!: CLICK <dial tone>

At least you finally got your money back. I have a $2400 POS sitting in a box exponentially depreciating away as we speak.

GRRRRRRRR!!!!! Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad

Thats not a fantasy if you're art. He has had his G90s since 04 I believe, correct? They were much much more expensive back then.

that'sa bummer, I love Electrohome but the ECP was not their best work. Maybe by the time the 3500/4500's came out they were better ? what did you get and why?

Interesting you should say that. There seem to be quite a number of people who love the ECP and think it is the king of the 7" ES sets. I've never had one, so I can't say, but it is interesting to see there is a disenting opinion.
