Has anyone loaded Windows XP Service Pack 3?
I've tried direct from Microsoft and also from a CD created from a downloaded ISO image.
It keep bombing out with a "failed access" error about 2/3 of the way through.
Is there something it needs or wants ?

A serial key ?
Just kidding, my "open" copies of XP updated just fine, so I doubt that is the issue...
SP3 is pretty big, it took me a couple tries to download it all on three of my computers, the connection seemed to work better overnight(maybe it wasn't as busy then ?).
I've not noticed any negatives with it, yet...

I had the same problem. It took me about a week to find a fix. The MicroSoft website wasn't much help.
I did a search on the web using the error description, and eventually found this info on how to "unhook any stuck registry protection" that worked for me. Read down the page for a more detailed description near the bottom. Apparently it's a problem created by installed spyware programs like SpyBot and the like.

Shortly after my post I found a lot of postings on the web warning against installing SP#3.
A lot of them seemed to warn about people's App's not running under SP#3 that used to run before the upgrade.
Judging by the install problems I had maybe it was for the best.

I know what you mean. I really debated about doing the SP3 install. I've never had any luck with any of the previous SP upgrades on any of the computers I've used. I had heard that SP3 could offer a 10% boost in speed, but after all this screwing around, I sure don't notice it.
The large company I work for just recently upgraded our work computers to SP2. They didn't expect more than a handfull of people to have a problem. Of course I ended up being one of them. Our IT guy worked on my laptop computer for the better part of a week, and still had to re-image the hard drive. That caused me to lose the better part of 2 years of effort in trying to get all the installed packages to work properly again.
I don't know how Microsoft gets away with it. What chance does the average consumer have to fix something like this on his own? This stuff is just getting way to complicated. I'm sure Vista is going to fix everything.
