Due to the fact that the timing settings for HD-PAL (front porch, back porch etc) are wrong(Picture not wide enough), the solution for fixing that problem is using a scaler (or a PC).

My question - What is the cheapest scaler that can handle DVI/HDMI 1080i input to DVI/HDMI 1080i output and to fix the porch problem (I don't need any other processing, inputs or switching capabilities) ?

Thanks,

I was advised by Gefen to take the HD Mate :
http://www.gefen.com/kvm/product.jsp?prod_id=4173

So what is a better choice the Gefen (for half price) or the iScan HD+ ?

That HD Scaler Plus from Gefen looks interesting. Anybody seen one in action yet? I see it's in Preorder status. For as much as I use my HT lately that's not a bad price at all.

Actually, I have installed one of these for a customer a little under a month ago. I didn't have a lot of time to tweak it as it was just to enable pal output from their Kaleidescape player to a Samsung DLP that does not support PAL. It seemed to work very well but I did not have time to really thoroughly evaluate its scaling abilities.

If the Gefen HD Mate Scaler allows you can really tweek video porches value, this solution is pretty cheap !

However, according to the user manual, there is just these statements in the picture adjustments section :

- Scale: Select overscan when input source is SD or HD video to ensure there will be no black band around the screen border. Select underscan when input source is PC signal to ensure full picture content will fall within the screen border.

- H & V position: Adjust for the best horizotal and vertical position of the picture on the screen.

Someone have to play with these settings to evaluate if this is really video porches relative Wink

John

I will be down at that customers sometime this week and will spend a little time with the device to better evaluate if it really will help, hell I should bring it back home for a week to test since they are out of the country for another month.

The Iscan HD+, don't remember if the HD firmware do (through dvi/hdmi), but only through dvi/hdmi digital input if your using 720/1080, since it doesn't process these signals via component input. Of course if the input is digital and HDCP protected you don't get an analog output.

If I remember right the Lumagen DVI (the basic model) does process analog HD signals, and is using the DCDi chipset which is supposed to be better for PAL sources (and was in my eyes.) The LDVI can't output 1080p though, like the Iscan HD+ ... of course then you actually have to be able to utilize 1080p, lol.

Every report on its scaling quality I've seen is that it is pretty bad. But if you don't let it scale, you should be OK.

If you are interested I could sell you an HD+ with SDI in perfect condition for $350. I would throw in an SDI modded Panasonic RP56 for another $75 and maybe include shipping depending on your local.

Just a thought and a solution for you which is quite cheap especially when you consider the other capabilities of the Iscan.

I realize it was not you. I had intended to do two quotes with yours being the one which explained that the HD+ would do the job and Aerobic247's quote being the one looking for the solution. Looks like I missed one of the quotes.
Please accept my humble apologies.

No need for apologies Smile Also little note -> With that HD+ only 1080i & 720p can adjusted (porches) It does nothing to 1080p
So HD+ is good for projectors that are 1080i capable.

Yes, and for me at least, that is unfortunate and the reason I need to upgrade my scaler.
