Kal,
Have you thought about making a CRT monitor subforum? It would probably bring in some people that otherwise might not see this site. CRT monitors would seem to be a natural extension of this site. I am still curious what the pinnacle of CRT monitors was. I know some say the Sony, but I don't particularly care for it. I haven't seen the widescreen model yet though.

Hmm... Not a bad idea. All the info on tweaking or repairing CRT monitors is so scattered all over the web.

Spanky, the Sony FW900's were absolutely awesome monitors. I used one for a couple years at a job. Excellent color, perfect convergence, and a really nice big beautiful image. They only downsides were that they were ungodly heavy for a desktop monitor and like all larger Trinitrons, they had the two timing wires which some people dislike. I'd definitely have one of them if I had the room. I never saw a desktop CRT monitor I would have rather had more than an FW900. I think street price on them was around $2000 back in the 2001 timeframe, but last time I looked, they were still around used for $300-400.

I've seen a bunch between $200 and $250. I'm going to grab a couple as soon as I possibly can; the 21" variety are really fantastic.

Agreed,

I have the 21" as my main monitor and it is great. I'll be getting a 24" as soon as I can afford (to buy and to ship it Wink )

Agreed. I haven't tried all the high-end CRTs, but the GDM-FW900s were definitely my all-time favorite. That's why I bought 4 of them: 2 for work and 2 at home. Flat screen, 16:10 AR, 24" diagonal, 2304x1440p@85Hz, ~350 MHz BW, rock solid and extremely adjustable. Introduced at $3k list, and affordable then by very few. I bought mine used at 10c on the dollar, many years later. I run them at 1920x1200, with 2 side-by-side.

No kidding, Scott. They're real backbreakers. I don't mind the size (they're not extremely deep for their display space), but the weight is killer (~100 lbs... 45 kg for you metric guys).

[One other downside is that they coated the screen with an anti-reflective film (very effective), that wasn't fixable if you damaged it. So mars and gashes are common on used units.]

Ok, I've added a few forum:

Direct View Televisions and Monitors
All TV and monitor display types including rear projection and flat panel. CRT (tube), Plasma, DLP, and LCD technologies.

I decided to go "wider" and not just have a CRT monitor forum. I do't think there's enough traffic to warrant that. If you guys post enough I'll split it up into 3 or 4 separate forums so get busy! Wink

I read that really quick and I thought it said "we can each have our own PIGpens"
Which, after working on an Ampro, a Sony 1252 behind it and now the G520 on the couch my living room has started to resemble. Oh yeah and the LD/DVD/Karaoke player I've been tinkering with, and the bag o' cables, and the steering wheel for the PC the list goes on.

BTW

THANK YOU KAL! For the new forum!

Even though I didn't notice it for a couple of days. ( I was busy, the picture's were tastefull, the dog ate my homework, dandruf reared its ugly head, lunch was served, I told her I couldn't breed, she slabbed me)
