Right now I'm running 1920x800p to my G70. this works fine for DVD and any other video type that can be opened with the KMplayer or zoomplayer or VLC.

Now I have the LG combo drive in my HTPC for HD-DVD and Blu-ray playback, to my knowledge there is no (simple) way to playback these movies in any of the players that have good aspect ratio control. I have used PDVD ultra and TMT in conjunction with YXY to playback with the the correct AR cropping but I'm disappointed with the image quality after YXY does the scaling.

I haven't yet tried Nero but I'm doubtful that it has anything to help me.

Any suggestions other than switching back to a 1.78:1 screen (I really don't want to)

None of your players will out put the HD material to 800p like you are doing with your SD dvd's? I use my lumagen scaler to that setting 800p.

You rang?? Ooops never mind Smile

What happens if you tell your software to output full screen-vertically stretched- ( is there an option in PDVD for that? I'll have to look )
WIll it stretch it vertically? Can't you then compress your raster and use a different memory block?

I never found a good solution, right now though Curt has some of my G70 boards for repair so I have some free time to decide what to do. Changing my screen to a 1.78:1 AR would fix my problem but would make my blue wear more pronounced when watching 1.78:1 movies and would take away the CIH "cool factor"

I also learned how to rip the HD-DVD's to my hard drive as MKV files, this takes about an hour per disc and leaves me with 10-20gb. movie files that work fine in J river media center, and K-media player. This may be the way I end up going unless some new software appears.

I was in the menu's for PDVD man, there's not much there. I've had the ATi MMC software on my SD HTPC for a few years and although ATi's software is made by sir-crash-alot, it has per disk aspect ratio control with stored memory. So if you pop the disk in 6 month's down the road it remember's you wanted the video stretched to "full screen". That's how I ran my Sony 1252.

I have to get off my butt and write something. You guys do know about YXY don't you? It's old and a little primitive but it does work.

I know of and have used YXY, for me it seems clunky and at times it refused to work at all. I've found for the way I watch movies it is easier to spend an hour (while reading the forum) to rip the movie to *.MKV and then play it with whatever player I want to.

I havn't had much success ripping to MKV. Can you provide details on how to do that?

Chris,

I followed a guide over on AVS, I'll see if I can find the link. Basically I used EAC3TO to rip the movie files and re-encode the audio to FLAC. Then I use MKV-Muxer to join the EVO video files and the audio into an MKV file.

You have to do it a few times to get the hang of it and some discs will cause unexpected problems but for the most part this method works OK.

I can't find the thread on AVS right now but if you're looking for a step by step guide the afterdawn or doom9 forums would be good places to look.

Good Luck

Still not having much luck. Everything appears to go fine through the whole process but when I try to play back the final mkv file I don't get any audio?

FYI, I was using Bewolf on HDDVD as a test.

What software are you using to playback. Might also want to try another title and see if that makes a difference. What settings are you using in EAC3TO?

I've tried playback with MPUI, MPC, WMP11, all with the same result. The video is fine but no audio.

As for the settings in EAC3TO, I am following the directions from the AVS thread you posted

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1033822

I'll try another disk.

I tried another disk and that disk worked fine.

Here are the log files that EAC3TO produced for both disks. The Bewolf disk has "E-AC3" audio, while the Planet Earth Disk only has AC3. Do you think that would be causing my problems?

The commands I use are:

eac3to.exe feature_1.evo+feature_2.evo 2: video.mkv 5: audio.flac 1: chapters.txt

Where 2 is the number of the main video stream (nearly always 2) and 5 is the number of the audio stream (could be any number), and 1: is the chapters.

You run eac3to.exe feature_1.evo+feature_2.evo without destination files first to get the track listing.

Then mux with mkvmerge (part of mkvtoolnix), using the chapters file (in the global tab).

I haven't had success with subtitles yet (they mux in but I can't see them on playback).

You need Sonic Cineplayer decoders 4:3, which you'll have to google to acquire. You don't need Nero, libav works fine.

There is no need to demux all streams, or strip pulldown. If you convert the desired audio to FLAC you will have very few playback troubles, just install Madflac or use ffdshow. FLAC is easy to decode and as it is lossless you lose nothing.
