I still don't understand this mentality.
HD DVD players will be around for at least 5 more years if Toshiba stops making players last year. Why would you not buy a player Kal? They are $120!
There are hundreds of movies that aren't just going to suddenly disappear!
There is no excuse not to have HD DVD and hardly any excuses for not having both for people with theaters.
I just picked up an HDA3 for $80. Perfect for the living room.
I have netflix but have been purchasing a few more titles with all the sales. Hopefully these movies I own and rent, dont suddenly "vanish" once HD DVD dies.

Yeah, that makes perfect sense. 'Cause you'd really be starving yourselves of some great content by not owning a betamax player.
I agree with my Iowa bud. Consider that a decent HD-DVD player is about the same price as 4-5 BD movies, and you could watch whatever you want whenever you want, I just don't get it.

Half of my argument is that Content is going to shift to B/R in a major way so Hd-dvd is on the ropes.
The other half is, i like tweaking you Hd-dvd faithful.

- Integration (I don't have rack space)
- Need an HDMI switcher (not expensive, but again, more integration required)
- Confusion for the family (which one plays in what? How do I switch? Etc.)
- My (pretty old) preamp didn't like the toslink audio for some reason out of the HD-A1 or HD-A2 that I had here for a few weeks a year ago. It would clip/sound garbled whenever a loud passage was played. I'd likely need a new preamp.
- I don't think Blu-ray versions of Paramount and Universal discs are that far off. I'm a patient guy.
And last but not least:
- Supporting HD-DVD just helps prolong the war and slow down HD on disc pick up rate in general which is dangerous to both formats in the long term (IMHO of course). I bought another half dozen or so Blu-ray discs a couple of days ago just to help out.
It would take me quite a bit of effort to integrate HD-DVD into my HT the way I'd want it to be properly integrated. I just don't see it being worth it to watch what for me amounts to 2-3 movies. The least important factor to me is money. $120 is nothing.

I know, ya bastage!
Kal, those are all valid reasons and I understand, but you gave none of those reasons for waiting in your original post. Instead you just said you didn't want to buy into the dying format that was HD DVD. You've cleared it all up now, though. You need an HDMI switcher and a new preamp, and your family is easily confused. Got it.

Yeah, I've come to the conclusion that Emdawgz is just a mean old southern redneck!!
First he tweaks us with scantily clad women avatars (but still clad), when we KNOW he has the "good" ones stashed away on his hard drive.
Then he teases us about his mega-buck BR player knowing full-well that he simply got lucky in his selection of BR and those of us that went HD-DVD got unlucky.
He could AT LEAST remedy one of those two affronts to us!!!

I was under the impression that this was a "family friendly" forum. I thought that the avatars that i use push the envelope. If you guys want it taken up a notch..... I can take it up a notch! 8)

As much as I'd like to look at the less family-friendly versions of the avatars, having them full-on would definitely curtail when and where I could look at the forum.
OK, next topic. WTF is wrong with people? I know - deep subject. I'm looking for Casino Royale on BD. Ever since I saw it on Art Sonneborne's 14' Stewart, I had to have it. Anyway, Amazon sells it for $20.95 w/free shipping. On ebay, looking at closed auctions, I would say at least 8 or 9 out of 10 people actually paid MORE than $20.95 - sometimes several dollars more. WTF?
If a disc is brand new sealed, I suppose I might buy something on fleabay to save at least a few dollars. Any more than that though, and I might as well order it on Amazon. So, if these people are going to pay "New from Amazon" price anyway, why don't they just put their selections in the cart and check out at Amazon instead of dicking around on ebay? Do they assume it's a 'good deal' just because it's on ebay - regardless of price? How they decide what their max bid will be - the normal price at Best Buy?

Just turn off the display of avatars. It's in your "Profile" page.
Kal |
Create a second id, like ecrabbwk. That way your work profile could have avatars off and home........skin city!!!

It's like the e-bay commercial. some folk get so caught up in the bidding they over pay.... god love 'em.

Yeah, it's nuts. Look at the HD-DVD release of Blade Runner Collector Edition. You can get it on your doorstep for $27.95 total from Amazon. Or you can screw around bidding and wasting time in ebay, and end up paying $30-35 plus $4-6 shipping. I just hope those bozos bid big on the HD-DVDs I have on ebay right now.

Those are good reasons.
HD DVD is a dead format is not a good reason. Like I said, if you can drop $400 for a BR player, why not just get an HD DVD player, and HDMI switch, get rid of your VCR in the rack, the toslink issue is weird and is worth trying again experimenting with settings, educate the family perhaps by painting your BR player blue and the new HD player red.
I am of the different belief that HD DVD being around has helped mass adoption otherwise we would still be stuck with $1000 players and $35 movies...oh wait, the movies are still that much!
Thanks SC for helping me!
