I'm in the planning process of building myself an HTPC. I probably will wait until after Christmas to buy most of the major parts. So I can save some lootcakes with the post-holiday sales. I'm going BD/HD-DVD combo drive and an ATSC/QAM tuner card for sources.
I know some graphics cards have a hard time outputting a QUALITY 1080i signal. My 7800GTX's being among those.
I'm not a big fan of 720p on my CRT. So that is out of the question. All my sources currently are 1080i/60. I would like to try 1080i/72 and 96 as well for film stuff. Are the new ATI HD cards good for this. I have been reading some good reviews for these cards.
I have also been reading some mixed reviews of the nvidia 8xxx series for HTPC use due to driver issues with both XP and Vista. I have been a LOYAL nvidia guy for 7 years now with my gaming machines. But I'm steering toward the ATI HD 3870 for the HTPC.
Are any of you using the 38xx series cards now? Any opinions?

I was looking at the Ati cards. As much as I hate their stupid idiotic system crashing software. The hardware's pretty decent. I've only seen an 1850X?? in action though. Frame rates looked decent. I dind't have a Gforce card there for A to B comparison though. _________________ Tech support for nothing

My Video Card is:
• MSI ATI X2600PRO (RX2600PRO-T2D512E) w/512 MB DDR2 probably not the greatest gaming card. ($75)
The rest of the system is:
• Core 2 Duo 2.4 Ghz E6600.
• MSI P965 Platinum. Latest audio driver from MSI.
• LG GGC-H20L Bluray HD-DVD Combo Drive w/Power DVD
• 2 GB Generic 800 MHz Ram (4 Strips).
• Running 1080p @ 96 Hz will also run 1080i@60,72 & 96Hz to NEC 1351. (Powerstrip required)
• Vista Ultimate 32bit.
This combination of hardware was by far the easiest HTPC I have ever assembled and configured.
Ive had an HTPC in my theater since 2001 probably have had a total of 7 or 8 motherboads /cpu's and countless video cards during this time frame. Since changing out the NVidia to the ATI card in this machine I haven't seen a dropped from or stutter. My preference has always been Intel for HTPC's simply because they always seem more stable. AMD's probably work just as well but I have good luck with Intel CPU's and chipsets and don't feel like gambling.
