I installed mine today, and watched a couple SD movies on it, just to check that it was working. It works fine, but what the hell were they thinking with that 5000 candlepower blue led that strobes constantly during playback??

lyd, why on earth would you use SD DVDs to test this product with? I would be testing Casino Royale in Blu-ray and see if you get the same problem I did where it would crash in a heavy action sequence (airport runway scene).
James, are you talking about the firmware update, or the software update? Even though I had installed the firmware update utility, I never found I was being prompted to install a newer firmware.
Hey, is everyone also selecting a Region in the DVD hardware? DVDs and Blu-rays are region coded, but I am assuming this aspect is strictly for DVDs. Not sure if it presents a problem if you do not select it.

I just wanted to make sure it was functioning in general, and I have no Blue-Ray disks yet. I have a few coming that should be delivered today, if all goes well. I might also go out and pick up a couple HD-DVDs, if I can get sufficiently motivated to deal with the nightmare of christmastime.
Are you using the bundled powerdvd?

In the dvd hardware? I didn't notice that was possible.

EDIT: I was just messing around with powerdvd... Is it not possible to use VMR9 with this software? That would be annoying. I have been using zoomplayer with purevideo and ffdshow up 'till now.

Just go into Device manager for that drive and you should have a tab where its listed. BTW, How many of you might have done the silly thing and tried to use 4GB of RAM and found your system to be unstable? After uninstalling the drive (and software), my Abit F-I90HD based PC will now just reboot as if I hit the physical reset button. Not doing it a lot, but its done it to me twice in two days. But, I do not know if it is the memory taking a dump, or the board itself.
Anyway, I did try to get this motherboard to use the software and playback Blu-ray and HD DVD in Vista, but it wouldn't work (gave an error message about video drivers), and there wasn't an updated one when I had Vista go search.

Oh, right, yeah. I didn't think of that as making a change "in the DVD hardware". I'd reserve that description for physical changes, like jumpers. Changes that write to firmware I'd call, well, changes in firmware. Just a semantic quibble, no big deal. I am easily confused.
I just left it alone, defaults to region 1. I didn't install any drivers off the bundled CD.

Mine didn't default to anything. Mine was Not Selected when I installed it.

LOL...I am glad my HTPC is a rack mount case with a door that covers the drive. First movie I watched was with the door open I looked up and said "WHAT THE HELL IS THAT!" closed the door and all was well.
