Could just be the settings on the printer -- basically white crush.

Hmmmm I'll try something else but I don't think that's it. I'm wondering if it's a forum setting.

Here's a crop of the above picture scanned:
Maybe an ink saving feature in the forum software?

It prints the grey from the screen capture. |

Wait. You're saying if you print from the browser, the shading doesn't show -- but if you print the screen capture of the same page, it DOES!?
I think your printer is related to Kal's freezer -- the one with two containers at two different temperatures.
It can't be the forum software. The forum software just displays what's on your browser window. It doesn't know if you're displaying or printing. It could conceivably be something in the print model that the browser is using, but that seems pretty unlikely. Can you print to a file, maybe PDF? If you printed your browser image to a PDF file and it showed the shading, that would definitely point to the printer or the browser. But since the printer prints the screen cap OK, that tends to say it's not the printer. What could the browser be doing!?

Weird. I'll try another printer when I get a chance. I've been referbing ink jets like crazy lately.
