A couple of more things:
1) The forum signs you out if it's idle for what, 1/2 hour or so. The 'old' forum would always remember the cookie and it was rare that I'd ever have to sign in.
2) The newsletter signup doesn't recognize duplicate emails as the old one did. If I sign someone up a second time, will they get 2 newsletters? I don't want that to happen.

I'm doing some testing on this now. There's something not quite right even after flushing cookies and temporary pages in the browser. I need to be able to reproduce the problem before trying fixes on my test forum.

Just tried it myself and I find it strange that it doesn't tell you, but maybe that's a security feature (so that you can't enter someone's email to see if they're already signed up).
Either way, it doesn't enter their name twice so they won't get 2 emails. I just tested it. Note that people are sent a confirmation email when they enter their name that they have to click on to be confirmed to receive newsletters. So entering someone else's email may cause some confusion. The email they receive when first signing up is:

I'm having the same issue with having to log in all the time. Cookies aren't working - as soon as I leave, I'm logged out and hitting the remember settings button doesn't help

So are you saying that if you close all your browsers, and then *immediately* re-open one and surf back to the forum, that you're not logged in automatically? In Curt's case it seems to take at least 30 mins (likely an hour which is the default session length). After an hour however, the "auto login" is supposed to work via cookies....

No - I just checked, it worked this time - yesterday it wasn't - but I really liked the way the old system worked - once you hit the "remember" setting, you never had to log in again.
Does phpBB allow us the same functionality, ie log in and never have to log in again until we actually hit the "log out" button?
Cheers

Yes, that's the intent. That's the way it should work.

Yup. That's what I want to get working again, but I don't seem to have problems with it myself (I can't seem to recreate the problem that Curt is having).
Anyone else having problems? Can someone recreate EXACTLY the steps that they're doing?

Kind regards

I went into the Digital forum and then tried to open a post about Art Sonneborne's new setup and got the following error:
"Please ensure both the install/ and contrib/ directories are deleted"
Then I got prompted to login again and the whole thing hung up.
FYI
Edit: I just tried it again and that didn't happen - so I'm not sure if this is an error or not.

Oliver: I've using IE6 and FF2.
I'm doing a test using FF2 on my alternate test forum. We'll see. I did notice some of the cookie settings were not set corrrectly so I've fixed those. No idea why it worked before on the old server.
The fact that it works for you now Oliver likely means we've licked the problem. If someone else still has problems 24 hours from now please let me know.

Oops! Heh. I know what this is... I was doing some other cookie testing with a little utility that only works when installed in the /install directory. I forgot however that this forum software doesn't let anything run with that directory created (for security reasons). I've since then nuked the directory so you won't see the problem again. So the forum was unavailable for the 5 minutes I was testing.
Sorry!

I have to say, this new host (ATCIhosting.com) is fantastic. curtpalme.com has been hosted by them for almost exactly 1 month now and so far we've had ZERO downtime whereas 1and1 averaged 3-7 outages/month!

Wow. It's been over 2 months now and not one single outage on our new site hosted at www.atcihosting.com. I have to say I'm impressed with these guys. I've emailed them a dozen times over the last couple of months to make some minor tweaks or changes to the server or to ask questions and they always reply promptly and are *very* much on the ball.
Complete change from 1and1.
Did I mention not one single outage over 2 months? On average we had 5-10/month with 1and1. Sheesh.
Add the fact that they're cheaper than 1and1 and the server and network speed is faster. 5 thumbs up!
