|
|
Hi guys!
I'm configuring our new dedicated server for curtpalme.com and this forum. For me, the download speed is a lot slower than the current place, but that just seems to be me. Could some of you from various locations around the world try it out and let me know what results you get?
Do this by downloading this file from both places and let me know how long it took in seconds:
EDIT: link to old site removed as we've now moved...
11.8mb ZIP file from new site at ATCI
(Make sure to clear your temporary files in between)
Thanks!
My results:
Current site at 1and1: 29 seconds (approx 500K/sec)
New site at ATCI: 192 seconds (approx 60K/sec)
Big difference. The ATCI support guy (who's across the country from the ATCI server) tried it and got the opposite: A whopping 1.8Mb/sec at ATCI and 926Kb/sec from 1and1.
Kal
P.S. No trying to figure out the new site temporary URL so that you can poke around... There's not much up yet and you won't find anything you don't already see here.

Oh bugger. I'm not gonna download unless it's a service manual I an actually use. A Barco 600 service manual....sheesh.
Kidding. I'll give it a shot once I'm done getting a 107MB ( ) definition file for the new Motorola V9m. We only have business DSL here. (And our printers are so old they print in pencil)
Nice work Kal!

I know. I figured that was the reason. I bought the service manual for my 8500 over a year ago anyway. It doesn't mean crap to me...looks like little kid scribbles

Both ran ~150KB/s... easily saturating my crappy Qwest 1.5Mb DSL connection. Makes me really jealous looking at some of your bandwidths that's 3,4... 8 times what mine is. Time to upgrade...
When are you planning to move the site, Kal?

Whenever I finish setting up the server and moving all the content and it tests out correctly.
Likely some time this month or in November as there's a lot to do and my time is limited.
There will be limited downtime here on the forum. Mostly just the time it takes for all of your ISP's to pick up the new server IP. Maybe a day. Two at the most. For some it'll only be hours. It would be less but 1and1 will reduce the TTL (time to live) so that the changeover is fairly immediate. (Idiots). The old forum will stay up in the meantime but it'll be locked so that the two don't get out of sync. The last thing someone wants is to post a bunch of stuff one day after I've done the backup only to lose it all once they point to the new server.
Thanks for all your tests guys! The new place looks plenty fast. They should be as most of their clients are porn sites which require high bandwidth, high availability.
Kal

Wow - that's fast! Yes, they're MUCH better. When I asked them questions I was dealing directly with the owner of ATCIhosting.com. He's all over the hosting forums too and seems to live on the computer like the rest of us. They have a live chat feature as well that always seems to work when I use it. I always talk to someone who really knows their stuff and is able to make server changes for me immediately. So far I'm very impressed. These guys really seem on the ball.

Using WGET for Windows on 5Mb DSL:
- www.curtpalme.com [74.208.10.116]
- Transfer: ~24 seconds (~516KB/second)
- Ping: ~73ms
- falcons.atcihosting.com [69.5.93.245]
- Transfer: ~23 seconds (~520KB/second)
- Ping: ~23ms
- Note: Server clock appears to be ~75 seconds slow.

You wanted tests from around the world, so:
From my room in the Hyatt Regency Tokyo, both sites are virtually identical at about 112-115sec. 165kB/s. I suspect the limiting factor is somewhere in the hotel's LAN distribution, not either of the hosting sites.
