Greatly reduce your Marquee CRT projector fan noise with modifications designed by an acoustic engineer!

Customers of E-Tech Systems have mentioned that fan noise is distracting some times, so an acoustic engineer was brought in and upgrades were developed to greatly reduce fan noise without compromising projector reliability. Far too many fan mods are simple untested 'hacks' that end up running the projector hotter than it should, reducing lifespan.

Here's how the E-Tech fan mod works:
  • The Marquee fan noise mod is done to your low voltage power supply (LVPS), a ten pound metal box which is removable with a screwdriver and sent to E-Tech Systems in Arizona (USA). Removal of the LVPS takes 5 minutes. See here for instructions.
  • The mod employs two new high quality Papst 92mm fans and the strategic application of acoustic foam material to dampen resonances in the sheet metal.
  • The improvement is about 5-6db, with none of the metallic 'pepper grinder' noise after.
  • Your LVPS is also tested remedied of the dreaded filament over-voltage problem that is common to many LVPS's and can destroy a set of CRT tubes very quickly.
  • Typical turnaround is 1-2 days.
This fan mod will help to increase the dynamic range of the audio portion of your home theater. If you've already spent a considerable amount of time and money tweaking the audio side of your home theater, you realize that a low noise floor is an absolute requirement to maintain a high level of audio quality. Less background noise results in a higher dynamic range.

E-Tech Systems in Scottsdale Arizona is the premier refurber of the Marquee CRT projector chassis as found in the Marquee, Vidikron Vision, Madrigal MP, Reference Imaging and Accurate Imaging series projectors.

Similar fan mods for other makes and models is unfortunately not available at this time.

Reviews/Testimonials

"I received the updated LVPS unit and I was able to install it first shot like a charm. I could not believe how quiet this unit is. Usually, with the 9500 LC turned off it but the unit in standby it makes enough noise to prevent me from listening to audio only in my room without turning off the circuit breaker. Now, with the unit in standby, I cannot tell whether the circuit breaker is on or off. I had to climb up on the ladder and place my ear next to the LVPS just to be sure it was working. I Love IT! Very quiet. Now even with my projector fully turned on, it is much quieter than before. Excellent. Thanks so very much." - John Roberge

"E-Tech is one of the few CRT related companies who really do offer fast turnaround times. Send in your LVPS today and you'll likely have it back within just a few business days. I sent my LVPS to Tim at E-Tech for the fan/filament mod. When I got it back, I immediately noticed how much quieter the fans were as compared with before. And the P14 filament voltage was right at 6.3. I tested the filament voltage again a year later (two weeks ago) and it was still sitting right at 6.3. Good job, Tim!" - CZ Eddie

"I really recommend this fan mod. If you have a Marquee or similar PJ don't hesitate to send your LVPS to Tim. He really is a great guy to do deal with. I had no problem at all except that it was hard to live without the Marquee in the turnaround period ( I live in Denmark so I have to live without the Marquee running for about two weeks). BUT the noise reduction is no more that amazing. Thank you Tim" - Henrik

"This is indeed a great mod. I've gotten a few off Tim over the years, and while fan noise has never bothered me personally, I do have to check once in a while in my own HT if the projector is on or off, the difference is THAT dramatic between the modded LVPS and the original." - Curt Palme

FAQ

How do I remove the Low Voltage Power Supply (LVPS) in order to send it in? Is it hard to do?
Removing the LVPS is very simple and can be done by anyone with only a screwdriver. See here for complete instructions with pictures.

What is this filament voltage check that you do? Why is it important?
Some Marquee projectors had their filament voltage inadvertently set too high by the factory (or may have been tweaked inadvertently by the previous owner). A CRT tube filament voltage that is set too high can in a very short time burn out the tube's filament, rendering the tube completely useless and unrepairable. The only option is to buy new (expensive) tubes. There is nothing worse than seeing expensive 9" tubes with pristine (unworn) phosphor rendered completely useless due to a filament voltage problem! Any new (to you) Marquee should always have its filament voltage checked before being put into use!

Guys!

Many thanks to Kal and Curt for organizing this so quickly! We can also offer return shipping at any speed you require; from Overnight to 5-6 days.

As mentioned in the small print, the E-Tech/Papst Fan Mod is for any model Marquee and the Marquee chassis as resold by Vidikron as their Vision One, Two, Three, Madrigal MP8 and MP9, any Accurate Imaging 8 or 9 not already equipped, and models by Reference Imaging and others. The mod is done to your low voltage power supply sent to E-Tech in Scottsdale Arizons and you will get your same one back after modding.

We also test/fix the filament voltage section for solid 6.3vdc for safe tube operation at no extra cost.

Thanks Eddie!

Our E-Tech Fan Mod maintains full air flow of the original five dollar fans but the superior bearings of our Papst replacements insures quiet operation for many years; you will not likely need a hush box.

Do you also sell complete modded versions, probably it's cheaper to buy then to send it from europe to america.

Maybe a little off topic question, but what direction is the airflow in the orignal way? Both intake?

I have that mod the good news is that it is a couple years old and I still can not hear those fans from any reasonable distance, I just went a looked / listened at them a few minute ago.

The bad news is that there are other sources of noise that I can hear when the projector is on. I do not have a hushbox but often wish I did even with the power supply mod.

Tim, any mods for the other fans that you believe will not hurt the projector?

BTW - I am sure most do not get that filthy. I got the unit from someone that must have been a chain smoker or something. When Terry was cleaning it our and putting in new tubes he could not believe how dirty it was. He had to take it outside an give it a good blow to remove most of the dust before he would allow it in his shop.

Hello

If you buy an LVPS from Curt he can send it here for modding.

Scott

We were changing out the 120mm core fans but it was not making much difference for the amount of work involved, so I do not have a recommendation on that.

question. i have a pj that had this mod done before i purchased it. it was very quite for the 1st few months. i now can here a slight ticking sound when i turn the pj on. the "ticking" actually makes the pj sound like a reel to reel pj. since the pj is directly overhead, and only a hair more than 2 feet at that, it is quite noticable.

so do these fans go bad? if so, is it simply a matter of swapping it out? and where can i get one (or two).

A few years back i ordered 30 for myself and other forum members to get a price break...wish i held on to a couple!!

It most likely isn't the LVPS fans but the Belly fans hitting the wiring that it passed through the belly fan area, this usually happens in a ceiling mounted Marquee.
Its a pain to get in there and move them also. tubes need to be removed to get access.

The tubes can stay put, the vent plate in the bottom sheet metal gives enough access to deal with droopy wire bundles. Do fix that before the fans chew through the wiring or you will be in deep sh*t.

ok, so i can drop the pj and fix it from the belly fan side? or i must drop pj, flip it onto its feet and tear down the side and top cover, cards in between the tubes and then i can get to the fans?

your post was timely as i was hoping to to this in the next week...and that was without considering the fans could chew through the wires!!! Shocked Shocked Shocked

just a follow up and thank you to forum members, and especially Tim: you are a gentleman and a scholar!! Tim graciously responded to a couple of my emails this morning. i thought it might benefit others so i'll paste the correspondence here.

Hi Tim, sorry to email you directly. You responded to a thread on curt's forum about belly fans hitting wire bundles. So if i read your post correctly, am i able to fish through the bottom screen (ie the top since it is ceiling mounted and pull/secure the wires? does this mean that it does not need any level of tear down (other than removing it from the ceiling).
thanks so much. if you prefer to answer at the forum for everyone's benefit, that is good too.
robb

Say Rob

The wires can be accessed thru the vent plate and secured with wire ties or heavy tape. A screwdriver is needed to remove the plate.
Tim

cool!! thanks so much. i was really dreading ripping it apart!!

Be sure to check out Tech Tip One http://www.etechvideo.com/techtips.htm and check your filament voltage, easier done on the floor.

We have all manner of Marquee parts and accessories and also our proprietary E-TEch fan noise mod.
Cheers
Tim

thanks again Tim. i secured the wires. the wire bundle that has the plastic tubing was hitting the center fan. there was a thin sliver of the tubing that had been worn away by the fan. the wires inside were fine.

this pj has had your fan mod completed...that normally includes curing the filament voltage, correct? if so, would it still be necessary to check the voltage?
humbly,
robb

hello
It should be okay if it was one of mine.
Tim
