I've recently stumbled uppon 3 old laptops. One has no power supply, it's a 386, one is locked with a password. It's an IBM 350CType 2620. I think it may be a Pentium one. Not sure untill I get it unlocked.

Other one is a Toshiba 2520 CDS 4.3 works OK but no hard drive ( I'll get around to that soon) and the screen is dark.
For now I'm booting FreeDOS from CD ROM and then swapping to a different CD to play a game.
I have a copy of William shatner'sTEK WAR here. Hope I can get that going shortly.

Anyone have old 286, 386, 486. P1, P2 laptops or desktops laying around?

Got the screen working on the Toshiba. TEKWAR plays smoothly on FreeDOS.

IBM 360C
1994
486SX
4 megs ram
340MB HDD with a hard drive lock DOH!
Took the hard drive out and tried a USB to IDE adaptor. No luck. I think I need a mini jumper to set master on the hard drive.

BTW: This thing sucked me into comuter time BAD. It's been along time since I looked up and it was 7am. THAT'S why my eyes hurt Laughing

This really took me back to 20 years ago when working on IBM PS/2 surplus systems. PITA the way they do anything.
Of courseIBM did charge $17 000 for a 486 back then (1990) so they had to be a little overbuilt.
To be continued

Got some parts in!! Industrial CF cards, CF to 44 pin IDE adaptors.

For now I'm playing GTA1 on DOSbox. Much newer Core 2 laptop though. I'll be back at the old laptops in a week or so.

IN the mean time what's your favorite DOS game?

I've ordered a CF to 44 pin IDE adaptor for this and an 8GB CF card. This is going to be fun.

It's here! This one holds two CF cards. So far the computer won't see the 2nd CF card under FreeDOS. Could be the laptop BIOS won't see a seond drive. They didn't have a single CF card adptor that had the screw mounts in the right place so I bought this on. So ar so good. FreeDOS sees all 8gb of the card. Boots damned fast too.

Now to install some games!

FYI: if you want to do this you'll need INDUSTRIAL CF cards. They are the bootable ones.

Picked up a USB floppy drive, downloaded a DOS 6.22 boot disk and wrote it using Win7 on my 2015 netbook. I've remove the hard drive because it's locked. Got it boothing off said floppy. Now I'm trying to get the external backpack parallel CD ROM drive working to load some games. Very Happy

The setup program for the Backpack CD-ROM drive will install to a DOS floppy boot disk!! Awesome. Swappin' floppies on a Saturday night!

Hmmm no backpack CD found. Strange. There might be something in the syntax of the config.sys or autoexec.bat files.

Got busy doing stuff. However, I did stumble uppon a 16mb PCMCIA memory card for the IBM and I found a 64MB 144 60ns EDO DIM for the Toshiba.

Also scored an external USB 2.0 DVD ROM drive (not much good on the 486) and a PCMCIA SCSI card with cable that may allow me to get my 8x Panasonic CD-ROM drive working here with the 486.

Tech head fun!!

I found out the PCMCIA standard for RAM cards is different than the normal one for devices that slide in the port on the side of the laptop. That card didn't fit and the ones that do are cost prohibitive. I'll stumble on one sometime.

In the mean time I resotred my newer 2015 Samsung laptop and played Scorched Earth in HD at 1366x768 on DOS box. So yed you can run emulators but original hardware just feels - - 'right'

Many people are like you. Just toss it when they are done. I did a poll with my friends and asked them to list all the PC's they have owned since the 90's. Apparently most of them just used them and didn't care what they were especially when the new stuff came out.
Almost none of them held on to their old hardware.

I have most of my PC's starting with my 386 - 25 through the AMD XP3200's I built in 2004-2005. Then the accursed Socket 939 builds that are all dead due to the capacitor plague. Seriously I've had 6 socket 939 boards and all are ded due to capacitors.

I find it's harder to collect the stuff from 2003 and up. It just won't work like the old stuff.

Maybe that's why I collect old tank built laptops too.

I use computers like I use cars. I've been driving a great car (my Saab) for almost 19 years. My computers don't last that long, but in the last 20 years I think I've only had 3 laptops. Unfortunately the latest laptop is not holding up well, and I may have to replace it after only 4-5 years.

I use computer like....a forgetful old man. I play with them, order some parts and get back to them a couple months or years later. It's always fun to open a lap top bag and find a bunch of upgrades for a 15-=25 year old computer and restore it a little or make it faster. Like taking my 486 from 4MB ram to 20MB and getting Win95 to run on it where 3.1 was running before. That was the lap top I posted th bat pictures from back in 2006(?) on here:

Ohhh man, I also had a Toshiba 2520 CDS 4.3. It was one of the most amazing laptops that I have ever had actually! Taking into consideration the price per quality ratio for it, I guess it was the best possible gaming laptop back in the day!

It was OK but a little limited by the RAM and the dual scan screen. It has trails. I have an Angel laptop from 1999, Celeron 300, 128MB ram, Win98, ATi 8MB graphics, company paid $4700(!) for it for Y2K upgrade - previous laptop was the Compaq 486 50Mhz. That Angel gamed very well. Use to play Rainbow Six on it, Quake 3, Quake 2, Nascar Racing 2 and I had a wireless joystick, the laptop had S-video out and I had some arcade style games on it. I could launch the games with the joystick and return to launch another from the menu. It was great. Had to travel with it a few times and I would plug into the Motels TV via S-video and game 'till I fell asleep. Worked really well.

BUT can you imagine $4700 for 300Mhz in 1999? Adjusted to today's dollars that's $7130!

What kind of PC can you build for $7100 today? How fast, how many cores, how much RAM? Mr. Green

I was just listening to a "Stuff you should know" podcast yesterday and they were discussing a game called Night Trap that originally was designed to be run on a VHS based game system!!.... my first thought was " I bet A.R. has this..."
