I see a lot of converters that can take composite plus analog stereo and create a 1080p60 output. I can't see how they couldn't suck...

What about one that will take composite video and auto-select (or maybe even manually select) either analog or digital (RF converted AC-3 optical or coaxial) and combine those into a 480i HDMI output? In other words, not do some crappy 1080P conversion, just leave the video interlaced for input to a Lumagen with HDMI inputs.

Why add the audio? Because some receivers assume HDMI audio overrides everything. And there isn't a separate audio input on most newer HDMI processors...

Or is this all a waste of time, since these converters do a crappy job of sampling the composite signal no matter what?

Or do I have to use an expensive old video processor to get on to HDMI with audio first, like a DVDO Duo or something? I don't even know if one of those will output 480i...

Anyways... maybe someone knows...

get either a Crystalio II which has a great 3D Y/C comb filter from Texas Instruments or a late Pioneer DVDR Recorder such as the Pioneer DVR-LX70D which converts Audio and Video to HDMI

Panasonic DMR-EZ48 is a solid unit with 480i HDMI out.

Key Digital KD-VP8 also comes to mind, though it’s quite dated...

They are designed for video games, but RetroTink products can take composite and pass through input resolution (240p/480i) to HDMI - different units have different comb filtering options as far as I believe. Notch filter versus linear...?

A bizarre idea also comes to mind: a non-scaling composite/Svid -> RGB decoder, fed through a non scaling VGA to HDMI (Extron DVC RGB-HD A) but that’s probably silly / unsure if the Extron accepts 480i. I have a couple different RGB decoders and Faroudja made some amazing old ones that slaughtered dot crawl, a nice one I was eyeing JUST sold on eBay yesterday. My decoder to VGA/HDMI ADC is probably a dumb idea though. https://ebay.us/syhzdU There’s the unit that slipped through my fingers :’(

RetroTink has some new stuff coming out soon that may be decently suited to your needs - but someone else here probably has some way better suggestions than me! AnalogRocks wassup? Razz

Off hand I'd think an Extron box of some sort may do this but not coming up with just the right one. Most of their scalers will do CVBS (Color Video Blank Sync) -Composite but the outpit is 640x480 or up. You need more of a transcoder 480i analog w/audio to 480i HDMI. I see allot of CCC (Cheap Chinese Crap) that may work but most of that stuff is HDTV 480P and up YPbPr/Component to HDMI (If you can find one with no scaling = Transcoding.)
(A transcoder is just converting the signal from one form to another; analog to digital HDMI in this case, not changing the scan rate at all )

Maybe we can figure out a 2 step process. Composite to YCbCr analog Component at 480i then Component to HDMI also at 480i. It may just be a mater of finding the right CCC device that can do it. Or as '666' has said there may be a transcoder for gaming to do this conversion. There were allot of strange scan converters that were created by good guys to convert video for arcade machines ( and often not CCC either ).

EDIT: Corrected some stuff that wasn't clear

https://www.pixelfx.co/content/morph_roadmap.html

Mostly for upscaling old games, but of note:

“...Built in video DAC

RGB/YPbPr output through a VGA/DSUB15 connector.
Supports scaled or direct output.
Downscale HDMI or other high resolution sources.
Analog to analog transcoding.
CRT sync/centering normalization across consoles.

Film Mode (VCR/LD/DVD)

Full frame Time-Base Correction.
3D Comb Filter.
Cadence detection.

I highly suggest reading the whole link, though! It has HDMI output, too... don’t you worry!

Sounds almost too good to be true, hah... I am certainly optimistic; I wonder if it will end up meeting the harsh standards of those folks over at DigitalFAQ et al for digitizing/capture? I do know that PixelFX’s existing work is very highly-regarded amongst the gear-heads on the Shmups forum.

The upcoming RetroTink 5x also looks like it will be better-suited to film sources than the 2x, pretty sure it will have input resolution passthrough / “simple” ADC like the original 2x units... but at the end of the day, both of these are for retro games. Time shall tell!

^ That thread should be the best source for any additional info Smile

The first of several potential new contenders has been officially released Smile

First batch sold out quite quickly - still very interested in how that PixelFX unit will stack up against this RT5X... it sounds like the most promising of ‘em all IMO

Has any one tried it with Laserdisk or DVD to see how it looks yet?

Way back when I use to have Laserdisk I has a line doubler built in to my Top of the line Samsung 27" CRT TV. Everyone loved the way it looked. One of my friends likened it to a photograph this was 1999-2000. Then when we got Cartoons on DVD everybody wanted to see my set up. I wonder if it would still look as good today if I fired it up with a Southpark DVD box set?

Especially after owning so many high end monitors, projectors and video processors.

Only a few prototype units went out to reviewers etc, it will be a couple weeks til general consumer consensus starts pouring in. I'm sure a good handful of people will make haste w/ testing film/video sources rather than video games, though!

Ahhh preview units. I use to enjoy reviewing stuff like that. I owned a bunch of it. I even did some for Crescendo systems.

RetroTink 5X has been out for a while now, should be ample reviews for any interested parties to look into - also has received a firmware update! As usual the thread on the Shmups messageboard is probably the best place to get super-detailed info… a unique feature is that it also allows for downscaling to 240p (I believe you can downscale 480i, 480p, and 720p specifically… unsure about 540p, heh)

I, personally, am more interested in that “PixelFX Morph” and can’t wait to hear more details & eventually see it in action!

Here is the thread for the RT5X
