Got a couple of customers who have switched out from CRT they bought from me, most were installed 7 to 10 years ago or more. In one case locally a dead Marquee HVPS facilitated a switch to JVC DLA-X590R which I installed. Customer loved it, i thought the Mosquito noise and jerky motion were distracting, but it was small and quiet.
Another customer wants to retire a 9500 with bad convergence drift, but he watches a lot of sport. He's looking at DLP, anyone recommend something decent around $1500.?

Don't have suggestions for the DLP, but mosquito noise and jerky motion on a JVC DLA-X590R sounds like incorrect setup or usage. You shouldn't have either. For jerky motion tell them to turn off Clear Motion Drive and any other oddball "enhancement" features (my JVC is much older so not sure what sort of junk they've added). Not sure where the mosquito noise is coming from but it shouldn't be the projector. EDIT: The sharpness is probably cranked up. I think it may be called "Enhance" under MPC.
Going from a JVC DLA-X590R to a $1500 DLP will be a giant step backwards.
Kal

I did go thru and turn off everything that looked like any kind of "enhancement" , including the one that made the 1080P native resolution into fake 4K.
The machine was markedly not easy to set-up as i expected. The vertical orientation to the screen was pretty much pre-set, violating it produced Keystone, and using keystone adjust to fix it was a no-no(I did it anyway). Customer loved it though and didn't see any of the issues i talked about. To him it just looked Great compared to his old 8500!

Kal | different customer, that gentleman will be going from a 9500LC with convergence drift to the DLP. He likes really bright and sharp images i think, so probably will like the DLP better

I have mentioned before to check with AVscience. Laurie usually posts weekly specials on their forum page. You can also call Mike Garrett or Craig Peer and see what they have.
A lot of people have been going crazy over the new DLP pseudo 4k. They are ok, but the on/off cr isn't great. Give Rocco a call. I think a friend of his recently bought a DLP.

If I had to suggest - a used Runco LS-5 or the Planar equivalent (8150) would be a good projector. 1080p only and they're used at this point, but I've read really good things about them.

they have a BenQ DLP for $1700. as their cheapest product. 10 segment glass color , 1080P chipset " pixel shifter
https://shop.avscience.com/BenQ-HT3550_p_673.html
Customer says he's looking at Optoma UHD 52ALV
what little i could fins is over-saturated colors and interpolated 1080P into 4K
same price, is one better?

I honestly can't answer that. I pretty much have dismissed most of these new DLPs, because the on/off cr was so terrible. I mean 1000 to 1 is bad. I didn't attend Cedia last year, but the year before the best one I remember was Hisense ultra short throw. Unfortunately IIRC it was $10k with screen.
For me, on the cheap end I would probably go with an Epson. I don't remember the model number, but it was bright and looked good. It was a pixel shifting 1080p.
Like I said, contact Rocco. I know he asked me about one and his friend bought a cheap DLP. I think he told me that he set it up for him, so he might have more hands on than I have.

I assume used isn't an option, draganm? The LS-5 I mentioned above has high native contrast (for a DLP) at 2500:1. With dynamic iris (that's nearly imperceptible, according to soundandvision) you're looking at 10,000:1. Color is spot-on Rec 709 and the projector is supposedly easy to calibrate.
