This is the third copy of the series I've purchased. Original 1.33:1 full frame on DVD in the late 90s, a re-framed 1.78:1 version in mid 2000's, and now this one in HD and still at 1.78:1 framing. Some fans criticized the re-framing - from Wikipedia:

Quote:
The original series was shot in 1.33:1 aspect ratio, intended to be viewed on standard television sets. The series was released on DVD as a 4-disc set. With the proliferation of widescreen flat-panel TV sets the series was remastered in 1.78:1 aspect ratio and re-released in 2005 as a 5-disc DVD box set. New framing causes loss of top and bottom parts of the frames from the original movie. This is not always noticeable because of careful transfer process, but in some scenes important details are lost. For example, in Disc 1, when the Gemini 8 / Agena assembly is tumbling around the sky with a stuck thruster, the thruster is not visible in the new widescreen version as it is cut off by the top of the frame. Some captions have also been compromised.[1]

This was a great DVD box set. The attention to making a realistic looking moon landing was incredible. Especially seeing as it was made 20+ years ago.

Apparently the 1.78:1 ratio didn't bother you much...

I never saw it, nor Apollo 11 for that matter. I really oughta catch up...

As I recall I watched it on my rptv that has cinimatic stretch to make 4:3 fill out a 16:9 screen without distortion. Looked good.

Yeah, the change from 1.33:1 to 1.78:1 really didn't bother me frankly, but some people really seemed bothered by it.

My understanding is that the footage was shot on 35mm film (not sure what resolution it was scanned at for the DVD release) so converting that portion to Blu-ray (1920x1080) may not have been overly difficult, but that the special effects may have actually all done with only DVD resolution in mind and had to be redone. There's a lot of CG.

All that said, I'm still surprised it too them 20 years, or maybe not... if it's a lot of work (ie $$$) they'd want to wait until they think they can recoup that cost and the 50th anniversary of the moon landing makes sense I guess. It's been 21 years since the original series aired on HBO.

How does it compare to Apollo 11? Stretches out the same scenes or brings a more complete story to the table?

Completely different.

From the earth to the moon's a 12-part series (60 mins each) that tells the entire story of the entire program from Mercury to Apollo 17, though most of it are the Apollo missions (the first episode covers all of Mercury and Gemini). It's re-enacted by actors - it's not a documentary per se, but a retelling from start to end on how it happened with usual HBO dramatic effect (though if you watch the making of you’ll hear how Dave Scott who was the tech liaison astronaut always tried to rein in the actors to be more like the actual astronauts who weren’t much into drama/flair).

See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/From_the_Earth_to_the_Moon_(miniseries)

Apollo 11 only covers that one mission.

If you enjoy well made and informative documentaries about space travel and exploration check out the BBC's 'The Planets' series. Just watched a fascinating episode about Saturn and the Cassini program.

Cool - I'm assuming you mean the new 2019 one here?:

Presented by Brian Cox (I have a ton of other documentaries from him - great stuff).

There seems to be an older version as well: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Planets_(1999_TV_series)
