I'm currently playing Scorched Earth(c.1993). Also have Tekwars(c.1995), Rebel Assault II(c.1995) and Slent Hill 4(c.2004).

What are YOU playing?

I'll be building a couple of retro PC's shortly too. One 233MMX and an AMD K63+ 450. I can never choose just one. Wink

AMD K63+ 450 got lost in shipping. I've opened a case with eBay. In the mean time I grabbed a back up processor. 200MMX for $4 Laughing

233mmx board is laid out in front of me. This is one pretty 22 year old Very Happy

Kids and I are playing Reader Rabbit and Treasure Cove. No real hardware, just emulation, except my old Roland MT-32. Which, by the way, Reader Rabbit 2 apparently supports. That was a pleasant surprise! I edited the MT-32 wikipedia page to include the game as supported. Smile

I've been playing with DOSBOX and WINE for a while. It's a no go on this Debian 9 laptop. I did get Day of The Tentacle running and playing on DOSBOX. I couldn't get Rainbow Six running. Even with Playonlinux. Tried loading an older WINE version 2.2 emulating WIndows 95 too. Still a no go. Sometimes a laptop just won't play nice.

My Samsung quad core runs DOSBOX fine. I have Scorched Earth and Duke Nukem3D on that one. Play's nice.

AMD K6-3+ 450 has now shipped. Took my opening a case to get the sellers attention. He has 100% feed back though so hope this works out.

Wow, it has arrived. He sent it fast once he realized he forgot to drop it in the mail 2 weeks ago Laughing
I'll give him good feedback. Thumbs Up

Now; System 1

Lemme ask you this. Should I run this AMD K6-3 450 with a PCI sound card or ISA? I was planning on this running Win95c, 384MB RAM, Video PCI ASUS 4mb 3D card plus dual VooDoo2's in SLI baby! 1024x768 3DfxGlide woo hoo! 8GB industrial CF card as SSD. CD-ROM

I have 3 sound cards. A Sound Blaster 128 PCI, A Diamond Monster Sound MX300 PCI or an ESS audio drive ISA card. Which would you run?

System 2

Pentium 233mmx with 32 megs of ram. ESS audio drive ( 1 bought 2 Very Happy ), still need a video card for this one too. What video card for this one you figure?

Also got a NIB MDK 1 & 2 box set still sealed. I always wanted this game but didn't have the $69.95 + tax for the MDK 1 from FutureShop back in 1997. FF 22 years and I got both for $22 bucks. Ironic eh?

What operating system are you using and what do you want to do? There are a couple of cheap Yamaha sound cards that are PCI that have true OPL3 chips for perfect FM synthesis. But there's one HUGE catch - your motherboard has to have... something... that it needs to work in DOS. All Intel motherboards up to like Core 2's I believe have this special "something" (Sorry - I forgot what it was), but not all AMD boards do...

I used a YMF-744 card with an old Pentium 4 northwood (1.7 ghz) on a DOS box if you can believe it. None of my games were locked to CPU speed so its ridiculous over-poweredness didn't ruin any of my games. I also used an MPU-401 emulator which ran my MT-32 and Sound Canvas. It was great. Pure FM synthesis, and real MT-32 plus digital capabilities meant that most DOS games were an absolute joy on that thing.

Just scored a Pentium 166 non-MMX system. I may build it into the 233MMX. 2MB S3 card too.

BTW has anyone here played Blood c.1997?

I farted.....around with the HDD last night. Apparently my external HDD dock is not compatible with any PC I have going, at least on IDE side.

Figures.

On the fun side I found out Soldier of Fortune II (c.2003) runs on Win7 64 bit with a Quadro M2000 on my laptop with 16GB ram and a quad core i7. LOL
Funny how some of the older programs run right on new hardware and some just freak out.

Surfed thrift again. Found a period Creative CD-ROM drive, 24x. A little new for a 233MMX but it beats the 6x that it came with.
Also got an iOmega 32x16x8 CD-RW drive for the same PC. Again a little new as my old 233 has a 2x CD-RW SCSI drive in it. However burning CD-R at 16x is MUCH preferable.

So in 8 stores I got the following:

AT keyboard $3.99
RS232 Mouse $4.99
Creative 24x CDROM $5.99
iOmega 32x16x8 CD-burner$5.99
2 sticks 32MEG SIM $3.99 last October at Thrift

Good finds lately!

So this should be a decent P233MMX system. 96megs ram, SB16 PNP, SCSI card, Rockwell dial up modem, Intel BNC/RJ45 network card, 2MB PCI S3 video card.

233MMX on motherboard with 32megs 72 pin RAM $45 eBay.
Case was givin to me with P166 non MMX and 200 watt PS with the aforementioned 1.7GB HDD, 6X CRROM and 32megs ram. I'll re-use this for a future project. 1.7gb HDD is out and being replace with an IDE to CF card adaptor and an 8GB industrial CF card made in Germany.
Win95c will be installed on this machine too.

Also found at thrift an old mother board box with 2 ATi cards, 4MB each on PCI on AGP and 4 ISA modems for $4.99 so I may try that ATi 4Meg PCI video card. Also in storage, found at thrift 3 years ago is 2 VooDoo 1 cards, a 4 meg and a 6 meg. I just have to find them.

1996 top of the line gaming here I come!!

LOL! Glad you're having fun with it, Jeremy, but I just don't get the attraction of old-school gaming. Any basic game today would blow the pants off just about anything you could have gotten 20 years ago. Do you have some particular favorite games that you just miss for nostalgia reasons, or what?

I RTFM'd. This 233MMX has USB ports! 2 of 'em! AND I found a rear panel header for 2 USB. Cool!

Still gonna run the RS232 serial mouse Wink

Did some deep diving into my personal stores and re-located that VooDoo 3, 1000 card.

Just ordering some heat sinks for it. The Rasbery Pie 27.5mm x 27.5mm x 20.0mm tall heat sink look like they should fit.

Also some smaller ones for the massive 16mb RAM

Scored a P 100 last week while surfing thrift for $14.99. Working, no HDD.
Day before I scored a 233MMX on a motherboard for $4.99

See where this is going? Laughing
