Link Posted: Sun Dec 02, 2018 9:12 pm Post subject: Fresh new Barco 909 Slit Pack and some issues (G2 ?) |
|
|
Hello all,
I just upgraded from my Barco 808s/E to a 909 Split pack !
However I've somme issues with the green tube.
At first startup, it was very dim, and it only showed on the screen at maximum contrast/brightness, so the video signal was there.
The other tubes light up well and properly.
Now, the green is very very bright I we can see some retrace lines.
Soem times the HT goes down at the startup, I guess the current is too much and it protect itself.
I've swapped the video signals going on the "head" (being a split pack) and the issue is still on the green.
I've swapped the neckboards and the issue is still on the green...
So I'm thinking to a G2 issue and thinking to switch the SMPS+G2 board.
I've almost every board in spare with the PJ (yes that's a good lot :p ) BUT the reference on my spareboard is not exactly the same as the SMPS+G2 installed.
The installed SMPS+G2 board is R7631437 and SMPS is R7631427 ; and my spare is R763143-12 (no seven).
They look quite different.
(My spare SMPS is also R7631427) This seven looks quite an important upgrade.
Then my question is... are they compatible ?
Thanks for your help
Robin

You'll be fine with both versions, I use them too.
The added 7 it means a newer PCB design. If last digit is 5,7 or 9, is fully compatible. 1 till 4, not compatible.
If you swapped all boards and your green issue is not gone, check all connectors as well. Typically for split-packs.

Hello Hulio !
I've seen you talked about these board and I was unsure it could be swapped also that way.
Thanks for such fast reply
So I tried to swap them and my issue is still there.
I'll check the connections, I'll keep updated on that.
I've swapped only CRT socket (with video amplifier) and this board for now.

That's very unusual. Are you sure a CRT pin isn't bent on the green tube? Very easy to do with the 909 video amps.
Other than the video amp going bad, I've never seen that problem on a 909 before. I Guess it's possible that the green tube may be internally shorted as well.
But try swapping the G2 board first.

Hello,
YAAA GOT IT WORKING FINE !!
Here is what I did :
I've swapped only the connections on the neckboard to check if the issue switch, and... not, still bad green.
No bend pin too.
In order to be very sure, I've swapped again the neckboard on blue and green (as I did)
By the way, there is a third connector on the neckboard, that is supposed to go on an option (don't remember what it is), which was disabled and not used anymore.
The cable was still connected on the neckboard side and wasn't on the other side. I've seen it better this time.
I don't like this useless mess, so I removed it, and it clear the view.
Powering up... and both green and blue are now working fine !!!
But red don't glow up anymore.
It was intermittent before and now every time.
Previous owner already had this issue and talked about it there : http://www.curtpalme.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=483176
Wouldn't this wire messing also on the red ?
I remove it...
And all working !!
With all the magnetics fields here, the unconnected wire messed up the neckboards behavior...

Hello Robin,
Yeah, I also advised Thierry to remove those cables along with the optional ABL card. They are for no use in a single projector configuration. If you have the SEMU card installed, get rid of that too and put a jumper on connector J5 from the RGB driver card.
Well done, enjoy your new machine.

Hello All,
Definitively, I still have some issues with this set...
I had some scan fail within the first minutes of usage, but after some tries it became well stable.
When it happened, the EHT goes down, scan fail led, and the Horizontal Scan Fail LED on the horizontal board is lit Red.
Before it is hot and stable, the image is very slightly shorter horizontaly (maybe one inch on each side)
So I decided to swap this board. New one has exactly same board number.
And.. it didn't fired up. I mean Scan fail right now, but the "Horizontal scan fail" is not on, this time.
At turn off it did a sound.. like sparking or some electronic stuff not doing something very good...
Tried one more time, and I've seen some spark somewhere in the back in the region of deflections boards, not sure where. But not on HT side.
So I put back the previous Horizontal board, and it doesn't start anymore. Fan are working and power on is green, but EHT not going up.
The HTHD and +CONV leds are off...
Did it fried the SMPS ?
Checked the fuse they look fine (tested onboard).
I don't see the link between +CONV and HTHD are they linked ?
More precisely, the HTHD is not fully off, it lit a very little then goes totally off, and seems to "try again".
What do you think ?
Going for another SMPS ? (I havn't stocked them there so I won't have it right now)
Thanks,
Robin

Pop the cover off the top of the H board. I've had a couple where the yellow coil in the middle of the board has gone up in smoke. H boards I have a ton of spares on. It's much less likely to be the V board, but could also be the SMPS.

Visually, I don't see anything abnormal on any board.
Oh just noticed something : the vertical scan fail LED flash at the startup. Not fixed.
(Coincidence is lit up a little longer)
Would this make this board more suspicious or is the normal behavior ?
Anyway I'll retrieve and try spare SMPS, H and V boards.

Hello, Finally I have some news.
I got my spare boards there and :
- Swapped SMPS and still no HTHD
- Swapped vertical board and still HTHD
Hum...
- Swapping horizontal board... ho, there it is !
So even my previous horizontal was then failed.
Had a bent pin and both side keystone and bow were inactive ; fine now.
By the way the picture is not as wide as before, I'll to tune the porche settings.
Picture is back
I'm warming it up to check its stability.
I still have a new issue I hadn't before... Picture is little shaky on both side (E-W), almost not or far less in the middle vertical center line. I've swapped with still another horizontal board and it's the same (after I don't have anymore !).
I let it warm, then I'll check if my convergence module has the 10R or 100R gate resistors, or if you have other idea what can cause this shaking ?

I don't think it's HT related, it's something I've already seen (on 808 but should be the same) there, the image is still properly focussed and more important the top and bottom are not moving.
It's more looking like noise, here is a video, it will be more clear : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KLTDCQVv9W8

I think you're right. Could be the H board, or SMPS, or maybe even the controller board.
