So.....

I have a green tube that was sitting forgotten in a corner for a couple of years; the glycol looked like Jello and there was some crap stuck to the glass, like a gray film. I have the bellows off, it was leaking a little; Curt was kind enuff to send me a couple of his.

I'm trying Windex, straight ammonia, alcohol; nothing is taking this film off. I have box of TSP, but TSP etches glass it says. I can scrape it with my fingernail so it does come off. Hmmm, what about some Toothpaste?

Yes! Minty Crest on a wet cotton cloth does the trick! LOL

Minty once more.

Guys

If your glycol turned to jello and left a mess on the housings, oven cleaner and a wire brush will clean that up nicely.

What would cause the glycol to turn to Jello in the first place?

Glycol is corrosive and will start to dissolve bellows rubber and silicone glue after a while, nine or ten years

OK - so the dissolved rubber and silicone can make your glycol turn to Jello. And it probably won't leak as there is still more rubber\silicone there still in place, and of course now your glycol might be thicker as well.

So in general, what's the best practice here for when to replace the glycol in a PJ? Every 5 years or so?

Guys

There is no set interval. Replace glycol when it clouds or discolors or you need new bellows. Chemistrystore.com has it; triethylene glycol 100%. I cut mine with ten percent distilled water.
