Used with HD-144 on a BG808. Works also with HD-145
Asking price: $120 plus shipping
I also have 2 HD-144 lenses to sell (unfortunately the third one was broken).

What’s the “thing”/benefit/solution?

You can put much better lenses on your 8" lenses. HD-144 and HD-145 give a general sharper picture and especially on the corners.
If you have the color-corrected ones, you have also much better colors.
I never regretted to swap HD-8 lenses for the HD-144 corrected lenses. That was a great picture improvement (colors and sharpness).

Sounds like exactly what I’m looking for, corner focus. What about throw distance?

I am not sure, but when I swaped from my HD8 to my HD-144, I didn't move my projector.
I have the green and red HD-144 lenses. I remember that one guy from the forum offered the blue one (not colored) for free (just the shipping to pay) in order to help me selling the full set.

When I put HD-144's on my 8500, the corner focus was a minor issue. (Partly because my 8500 was never very sharp, electrically.) I thought the changes from color filtering were a HUGE ENORMOUS improvement. Without color-filtered lenses I thought the 8500 looked flat, drab, lifeless. With the color-filtered HD-144's the colors were vibrant and lifelike.

when I put 145's (color filtered) on by BG1208 the image was much sharper and more vivid color. well worth to me at the time. I did have to move my pj a foot or so.

Since the adapters are hard to come by these days, you can try an experiment to see if you like the color improvements. Rosco Calcolor gel filters can be put in front of the lenses to filter the colors, and it really works pretty well. I experimented with putting them on the "front face" of my 8500 tubes (actually the front of the glycol chamber) and that seemed to affect the sharpness of the image just a bit. It would probably work better to just tape them onto the front of the lens barrel. Might increase your internal reflections a bit, thus messing with your on/off contrast a bit, but the colors will look great.
