Link Posted: Thu Dec 14, 2017 2:11 pm Post subject: [Cine 7+] Image shaking |
|
|
Hello everybody,
I've recently got my hand on a Barco Cine 7+.
This beauty has around 2500 hours and while I absolutely love it, I've noticed the image starts shaking after 25-30 minutes.
So, I've made a little bit of research and came across this thread from 2010:
http://www.curtpalme.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=22886
Douma posted a video of his issue and the exact same here, whatever the resolution or source:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9dWlGw3VR1E
The behavior seems to be the same. An additional noise is coming from below the tubes at the front of the projector.
Following the post of Curt Palme back then, it could be the Splitter.
Here are my questions:
- Are there simple steps I can follow to be sure this is about the Splitter?
- Does anyone still have parts of Barco Cine 7?
- Can I still use it for the moment or is it better not to?
Thanks in advance,
Koma

Sounds like the splitter. No way to know for sure unless you swap them. I have lots at $100 USD tested and confirmed working, plus shipping. Email me through the main website if you're interested.

Be aware that i can ONE anode cable also! i had it on my 1209/2 . take one anode out of the splitter ONE AT TIME, and see if it stops. don't put it back until you have check all combination.

Hello Lydmann,
Thanks for your advise.
Sorry but I'm totally n00b about CRT Projectors, so I have a few questions:
- By "anode cables", I guess you mean the 3 pink cables that come OUT of the HV Spliiter?

- Is there best practice on how to remove these?
I guess when the CRT is off for several hours ?!
- What is the expected behavior when one if off?
One color won't just show up?

Turn the collar on the connector CCW, and pull the wire out. Make sure you ONLY pull out the wires going to the tubes, and not the one going to the HV quadrupler under the chassis. Yes, the tube that you disconnected will not light up, but the other two will.

Yes, each one of the 3 "OUT" cables, not the "IN" one, got it.
I'll give it a try this week and post the results here.
Thank you guys for your support, great community, really appreciated .

Just make sure that the leads haven't been changed. If you remove the quadrupler lead, and power on, you will destroy the set (but the smokeshow is fun to watch! )

Ok.
I feel like an idiot asking the same thing over and over but there's a chance I can kill my projector by pulling out the wrong cable, I prefer to ask again.
English isn't my mother language so there is that, too.
So following this picture:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/il4s48mv5hkww0f/Barco-Cine-7.jpg?dl=0
The workflow would be:
- Remove 1, see if the picture still shakes after half an hour;
- Put back 1, remove 2, ...
- Put back 2, remove 3, ...
But NEVER remove 4.
Do you agree with this?
Should I remove one at the time or 2?
So that only cable 1 remains, than only cable 2, than finally only cable 3?

YEs, correct. Remove one of the leads at a time, of 1 2 and 3. 4 is definitely going to the quadrupler, and that splitter is original. I can tell how the wires are routed, they have not been moved since the set left the factory.

Wow, I feel like an idiot.
I can't figure out how to remove these things...
I've tried pulling the whole cable including the black parts, pulling it starting from the black head, also just the pink cable.
I've tried turn it around, nothing works...
I'm afraid to break anything. It isn't super accessible either.
Any advise on that?

Grab the black collar, rotate CCW about 90 degrees, and pull out. They do stick once in a while, so maybe heat up gently with a heat gun? Also push down on the collar while rotating to see if it frees up.

Small update:
Thanks for the tip. I managed to remove the cable for the blue tube, leave it running and it still shows up after 45mn or so.
Moving on to the green and red cables...

So, 3 days ago, I wanted to show the projector to a friend.
I warned him about the image shaking after 30-40mn and we decided once it happened, we shut it down.
So, I've replugged the blue cable to the HV Splitter and here we go.
We start playing Super Mario Kart and after 20mn or less, we began to see a new behavior: the image is going and off quickly with a little "pcchht" noise (like electrical).
We immediately shut it down and left it as is.
Today, I wanted to give another try today by removing the middle cable (I suppose it was the green one). I turned the projector on but no picture .
I've shut it down again, put back the middle cable, turned it on again but still nothing!
In the front, I get these leds:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/zbxusopfw3eeytw/2017-12-25%2019.59.23.jpg?dl=0
According to the Owner's manual, -17v green light is off and SF red light is on.
Please don't tell me that I've just killed my Cine 7

Are you sure it's the SF light, and not the hold down EHT indicating HV shutdown?
http://www.curtpalme.com/Barco701_Layout3.shtm
If it's the hold down, then either the quadrupler or splitter has failed completely, (guessing the splitter), and it's now time to change it.

Indeed, I'll double check but you 're probably right.
Ok, so whenever you have the time top test some, I'm ready to buy one .
Thanks

Hello there.
Some update: I've recieved the HV Splitter from Curt (thank you for that).
I've replaced the stock one by the one, turned the projector on and... Hurray, some image again!
Nevertheless, there is still one led green missing (like there're always have been since I bought the Cine7): It's the HTHD.
The red led (Hold down EHD) is gone now but the image is still shaking after 5-10 minutes.
Does that mean the culprit was the quadrupler from the beginning and it killed the HV Splitter at some point?
Does that mean I have to change to quadrupler now before it kills the HV Splitter again?

Can you upload a video of the shaking, preferably with the test pattern to Youtube, and then link to it here?
I test run every splitter for 12 hours (overnight) before shipping, but it is possible that the problem is in the splitter.. or quadrupler.
It is more likely that one of the pink HV leads has an issue in it, so try disconnecting the HV lead going to each tube as you did before, to see if by disconnecting one tube, the problem goes away.
A quad cannot kill a splitter, but sometimes it is possible for both to fail in a short period of time. My guess is that the HV splitter failed first, which may have damaged the quadrupler, that is also possible.

Thanks for your reply, Curt.
I'll make a video of it in the next couple of days.
I'll also continue to test by removing one pink cable at a time.

Hi again,
So, here is the thing.
I unplugged the pink cable for Green signal. I've turned the projector on.
It was just a little shaky the first 10 minutes. I've tried to make a video of it but you can barely see it.
I decided to wait because it usually gets worse after 20-30 minutes... And it wasn't getting worse.
I told to myself: that's it, the culprit is the cable for Green!
So, I put the pink cable back on to show you the general behavior... But the shaking was gone !!
I've calibrated for a PC at 1280*720 @60Hz, I've play a couple of games on my SNES and so far, so good!
I don't know what solved the problem nor if it will last but I'm in heaven for the moment !
Anyway, I wanna thank you Curt once again for your help.
Be sure I tell everyone I know (IRL and on the web) about your work and this website .
I'll post back if ever there's anything again.
