No, the G70 does not use a Dallas chip.

By all accounts, yes. They have some issues with convergence board failures but Curt can fix those.
The big issue is that there are no known sources for replacement tubes for them. P16LJE types.
When they're worn out, that's the end. Unless you want to convert the chassis over to run entirely different tubes.
This tube type has a thinner neck than most other tubes so you can't even put a different tube in and keep the same magnetics.
Changing over a G70 to run different tubes would require finding tubes, making neck board adapters, maybe modifying the neck boards as well, and finding compatible magnetics as well.
So if you buy a G70, tube condition is EVERYTHING. What you get is all you will ever get short of major re-engineering of the
unit to run different tubes.
If you did want to go in that direction, I'd choose Marquee 8520 LC hardware for the tube swap. I think it'd be easier to adapt that to mount in the G70 than anything else.

ElTopo | honestly IMO, no they're not, you really should start with 3 working G70's in order to keep 1 going for a reasonable length of time,
recent example

. | based on my experience, add PA boards, video input, and deflection to list of "common failures"

But then again, I know G70 owners who've had them for years and never had any trouble at all.
I think it is fair to note that all electronics will reach the point at which something will start to fail.
Most CRT projectors have reached that age where you can expect their reliability to be dropping.
But to be fair about it, most CRT projectors should be pretty close to trouble free for at least the first ten years
after they're built, which is longer than the expected life of MOST forms of consumer electronics.
I would encourage a G70 buyer to acquire a second unit for spare parts. I'd encourage any CRT projector owner to do the same.

Any chance to find out the manufacturing date inside the menu of the G70 ?

Ideally, you want a G70VR or find a set of VR lenses somewhere

If you google for CurtPalme G70 Owner's thread, you'll find that thread and then you'll find a link to another thread of someone who obtained one and had ChadB calibrate it. According to ChadB, it's the sharpest G70 he's ever seen.
In my opinion, though it probably is a hell of a G70, a good 9-incher would still beat it.

It doesn't use any kind of a battery backed up memory chip like a G90. It uses eeproms that retain their data with power completely disconnected.

I don't know. Personal opinion, so you can take it or leave it - unless your mod isn't decreasing airflow, I would leave the fans alone. The G70 is thermally challenged enough as it is, especially when hung from a ceiling. My two cents.
If it's possible to actually increase the airflow while making it quieter, then I would say go for it. But only if you can verify this.

ElTopo wrote: | How loud is the G70 after a fan mod? | Better but not good enough IMO. I cut out the cage got a few db. I stopped short of changing fans because of reported issues of insufficient static pressure.
I went hush box and I kicked myself for not doing it sooner. I now measure ~25-26 db @ 1M.

Barco 808LC owners also like those along with the lenses instead of HD117
