I've heard of him (though don't know him). I believe I remember seeing him on AVSforum years ago... back when I was more heavily involved with that forum. I would make sure to confirm he has Sony G70 experience. Sony CRT projectors can be a bit confusing, especially if you haven't touched any CRT projector in a while.

Let us know how it goes!

Kal

Bang on how? How did you calculate the throw distance?
Reason I ask is if you used the Sony calculator / recommended throw, it's too far and you won't use enough phosphor/won't wear evenly/won't put out as much light/will wear faster than it should. Manufacturer recommended throw distances are very conservative.

More info: http://www.curtpalme.com/TubeCondition.shtm

(third page has the best way to determine correct throw distance)

We used PjCal. It was 2" closer approx than the Sony Spec.

He has done many installations of G70 and 90's. Hasn't done one in a while though.
He had no problem offering referrals to previous Sony Installations.

Thanx for the help.

That's what I was afraid of. It's too far back if you want to be optimal. PjCalc is Sony's tool and is very conservative.

I'm going to quote someone else because it's easier than typing myself: Wink

PJcalc is super conservative and was designed to be very forgiving for many different installations and less-than-careful installers. In our HTs where time isn't money, we can be much more exact about how we set them up. That's why you should use the "sunglasses / maximize-rasters" method - and pretty much ignore what the manual or PJcalc says. You can use PJ calc to get rough numbers but realize - it's could be as much as 10% on the long side for throw distance.

The "look in the tubes while adjusting width and moving the projector back and forth" is the method I recommend as well. I documented it about half way down this page:

In the "for what its' worth department" This is my actual setup with rasters very much maxed. You could scale your vertical height to mine and figure out a corresponding throw distance.

Cool!

FYI however - it's the width that matters. Scale to fit the width. Tubes are 4x3 surfaces and we all tend to use 16x9 or wider screens these days so it's width that runs out first.

Thanx Guys,

Looks like ill be moving the projector.

Its currently mounted at 107 1/4 from the screen face to the center of the PSS mount bolt.
Or 90 7/8 from the tube face to the center of the screen.
I thought I had it close!!! Sad(
That's with a 44x78 16:9 screen.

Check out mounting like this:

http://www.curtpalme.com/MountingMethods.shtm

It's what I did back when I had a CRT projector. Even when you think it's perfectly square and then go to set up, you'll end up shifting the thing an inch here or there to get it perfectly square (I did). Mechanical positioning is always better than trying to compensate through the electronics. You'll optimize phosphor usage and also stress the electronics less which means a more stable convergence from turn on to turn off.
