I am trying to improve the image and I have a question about contrast.
Shoud the clipping bars stop at 234 seeing 235 is the reference white, should it be somehwere in the 240's or as far as I can get the contrast on my set show (in my case 250)?

I dont have that pattern so it doesnt really tell me how far to 255 should I set contrast.

Kal I know I am being dense but I dont have that pattern but reading the tutorial I get the impression that its telling me that I shouldnt try to get clipping all the way to 253 but rather somehwere in the middle between 235 and 255.
Am I right? I have experimented with calibrating my set at about 243.

If you don't have that exact pattern, get a free one like AVSHD709 (Google will give you a link).
It has patterns all around white (235) that will let you set it correctly.
The instructions say:
With Contrast set to its mid-level setting, gradually raise the display's contrast level as high as you can as long as at least one of the "Above Video White" bars is still visible. Under no circumstances should the "Below Video White" bars ever be invisible.
Above Video white is just above 235 (like 236 or 237)
Below video white is just below 235 (like 233 or 234)

I have the avs hd709 patterns and thats what I am using.
Its interesting, I have been reading about this and there doesnt seem to be any consensus about the proper setting.
I tried with low contrast which clipped white at about 253 and after calibrating I didnt really like the picture so I raised contrast up and she white at about 240.
At this setting I get 40Fl with an already low backlight.

There will never be any one proper value or setting for any of these because that's the point of calibration: To adjust until you get the desired results. In this case it's without clipping or cutting any of the information.
If there was one only correct setting, there would be no point in allowing the user to adjust. The manufacturer would simply hardcode the setting and not allow adjustments.

Specifically what and why it is and how much of it makes it into consumer video distribution.
For modern digitally mastered consumer video (not synthetic test patterns), I'm of the opinion that there is very little BTB/WTW from major studios and what little there is is from filter ringing. AKA mistakes, artifacts, and errors. Clamping a digital at 16/235 removes and 'corrects' them and is the right answer IMO. YMMV.

I would agree with that.
Studios do not (or should not) master with BTB or WTW content as displays should not be set up to display it.
